IMAP setting on old MacBook Air

I am setting up my mid-2012 MacBook Air for one of my kids and I don't seem to be able to change the incoming mail server from POP to IMAP (no matter what I do I just don't get the option). Is this because it is running macOS Sierra (V10.12.6) - newer OS are incompatible with this generation of Macs apparently? Any assistance appreciated as I'd like to make use of the laptop - it runs beautifully otherwise.

Thanks! I really appreciate your reply. The provider is Optus i.e. @optusnet.com.au.

I'm not technical so apologies if this response is a bit 'lay' but the problem is that when I set up a new mail account I am not given the option of choosing IMAP or POP for receiving email, it just automatically chooses POP and there isn't an option to change it (strange as we are an all-iOS household and I haven't had a problem on other devices)

Thanks again! I've tried this but whenI get to step 8:

Enter the following information

  • Account type: IMAP
  • Description: OptusNet
  • Incoming Mail Server: mail.optusnet.com.au
  • Username: Your OptusNet username (without @optusnet.com.au)
  • Password: Your OptusNet email password

this option doesn't appear - I just go straight from entering the password to a POP account being set up (and I don't get the option to change it)
