Mail sometimes not sending, not shown in sent folder or outbox

Since the recent introduction of the "undo send" function I've noticed that icloud emails are occasionally not sending. This seems to happen if I close the (native) mail application during the "undo send" period. All traces of the email have then disappeared (outbox, sent mail) when I next open the app. And the recipient doesn't get the email.

(I've tested, and it still happens if I swipe up from the middle of the screen to close the mail app, so I'm definitely not accidentally hitting the "undo send" button when closing!)

Is this expected behaviour?

You hit it, right on the money. Apps should never be force-closed unless they are not working right. Force closing an app terminates it IMMEDIATELY, so whatever it was in the process of finishing is lost.

There is no reason to force close any app that is working; it wastes energy when the app is next used, and slows down your phone. Here is the long version→Do not close "background" apps | Communities
