Cannot Download/Install Monterey 12.6.7 or Ventura 13.4.1

I have tried multiple times to install both of these.  Software Update completes the process (in progress bar), and then reverts to the initial state of Software Update as though nothing had happened.  I can’t find evidence of anything having been downloaded; am never prompted to begin installation process etc.

Also, Software Update does not "automatically keep my Mac up to date."

Does anyone know what might be happening?  Suggest fixes?

Running Monterey  12.6 (21G115), MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)

Thank you!

Dial, Safe Mode worked. I d/l'd Monterey first and then Ventura. No problems, so thank you for the solution

I ran Etrecheck: no major problems, a few minor ones: unsigned software (brought over from another machine -- I deleted it), and a report of numerous app crashes. I'll paste in the crash reports in case they're useful, but don't feel obligated to go through with them.

It seems off to me that I can't update/upgrade the OS; if it happens again, I'll have to dig deeper. I bought this machine in 2021, but I haven't started using it until just recently. There shouldn't be any junk on it, and I've made only cosmetic adjustments.

Regards, and add to your stack of points!

Ventura 13.4.1

Monterey 12.6.7

Use any web browser to download one of the .pkg files (you do not need both). They will be 12+GB in size.

Double click on the .pkg file in your Downloads folder

This will put a copy of "Install macOS Monterey" (or Ventura) in your Applications folder.

Double click on the "Install macOS ..." that you chose.

This will install the version of macOS you downloaded.

When you are finished the Applications -> Install macOS ... will be automatically deleted.

HOWEVER, the .pkg file will still be in your Downloads folder taking up 12+GB of storage. Fell free to delete it.

My apologies for not replying sooner, I only happened across your post again while searching about something else.

I had a look at your EtreCheck report and a few things stand out. It appears you have an old version of the MRT.app installed. MRT is the malware removal tool which runs scans of the computer at intervals to protect again known malware. The version you have is com.apple.pkg.MRTConfigData_10_15 v1.93 which is a PKLeopardPackage from around late 2019. I suspect your XProtect.app (Apple security) is an old 10.15 version too. Even back July when you posted it was out of date.

You have four unsigned apps on the system and the structure of your disks doesn't appear typical.

Control Center looks after customising options on the Mac. You should be able to get information from the Console application in your app menu. Keep an eye on your firewall settings and which apps appear in your firewall exceptions settings. This should give you a clue if firewall/stealth settings change or any apps persistently turn up in your exceptions list after being removed.

If you happen to see this post I'd be interested to know how you're going with the MacBook Pro.

Dial, thanks. I tried downloading Monterey first several times; Monterey does not D/L either; process looks exactly the same as screenshots above for Ventura.

You also reminded me of something I left out:

In spite of “downloading the installer“ several times over the past two weeks, I find no trace of OS install files being “added” on those dates. Nothing in the Applications folder.

I’m not knowledgeable about these things, but I see activity in Console during d/l, no idea what it is.

Perhaps I’m not searching thoroughly enough? I’m searching visible/invisible, including system files. Looking for “install,” pkg, dmg, Monterey, Ventura, large files. Used Finder + refinements, Find Any File etc.

Download takes about 58 minutes, and network activity shows downloading during that period. There is no error or other message after “downloading“ is complete. Software update just snaps back to its original state as if I had done nothing.

Shutdown/restart doesn’t fix it. I haven’t installed any rogue software or weird extensions/modifications (that I’m aware of, at least).

I’d like to follow up on your idea, though, if you have any further suggestions. Thanks for your input!

Dial, thanks for the instructions. Appreciate anyone's input on the report.

I would pass the problem off as a one-time glitch, except that I suspect something's off if I can't d/l system software. Even if it's a known issue that others have reported.

I looked online for install files as Bob suggested, glad for once I didn't go for a DIY solution. I have a tendency to tweak, hack etc.

Thanks --

Please disregard the post and attachment above (Jul 21, 2023 12:41 PM). System won’t let me edit my post, plus I uploaded the log file by mistake. I’ll look for instructions on how to delete post. Apologize for the confusion.

I give up -- I can't paste in an EtreCheck report (from a plain text file) without the resulting attachment looking like a hash. No idea what I'm doing wrong, but I'll just move on.

I truly apologize for making a mess of this thread. If someone can get the Apple moderators to take the posts down/clean up the thread, I'd appreciate it.

Gravity, thanks — I did wonder about the high CPU usage. I’ll read up on triald and related issues.  That’s quite a list of settings that aren’t functioning properly.

Any feedback on this, or should I post elsewhere:  I’m not a sophisticated user, but I want a snapshot of what’s happening when my machine is running slow, etc.  I use iStat Menus on an older machine to monitor system from the menubar. Does Control Center do most of this now?  Other software?  TIA
