In-app voice search not working as intended.

I have new Apple TV 4K. When attempting to use in-app voice search (YouTube, Netlfix, Disney+ , etc) with the remote, it defaults to global search. In-app search works perfectly on my older Apple TVs. Why doesn’t it work with the newer one?

My Apply TV (4k) remote voice search works properly on all apps except regular YouTube (as opposed to YouTube TV). In YouTube, I can search, and results come up, but when I release the microphone button to choose a result, all results disappear. Reinstalling YouTube does not solve the problem nor does powering down and restarting my Apple TV. This is not an occasional problem, it happens every time.

Verify that Dictation is turned on in Settings.

Verify that (one of the letters in) the on-screen keyboard is selected when using dictation for in-app search. Else the (global) Siri assistant may be invoked.

You would get an indicator sentence in the upper right corner, when in-app dictation for text fields is available.

Use Siri dictation on Apple TV - Apple Support

I had the same issue. When you are in the YouTube app, go to settings and make sure that microphone access is on. Then you will also have to go to your Apple TV settings and click on general and scroll down to dictation to make sure that is on. My dictation was set to off and once I turned it on and went back to YouTube, it let me use my voice to search.

enabling dictation worked for me, however, I am sick and tired of Apple asking me if I want to sign in using my Password or two factor authentication, then disregarding my choice by forcing me to use their BS two factor authentication. I'm getting to the point of Saying F-Apple. I have hated 2-factor authentication since it inception, as it is completely un-necessary.

I spoke with Apple support. Apple designed the Siri remote with Siri Only Search. Apple did not include the ability to use third party app search. Third party app search has allways been available until now. So throw away you Siri remote. You can use any of the non-sir apple remotes and you will get the functionality you are looking for. Apple should offer a trade-in program to make up for the bait and switch.

Besides the Siri digital assistant functionality, the microphone on the remote is also used for dictation (speech-to-text; speaking instead of typing), which is a separate functionality, and that will work inside third party apps. Just make sure a text input field is selected first. Throwing away a perfectly good remote will not solve voice search issues.

Siri Search have always been limited to apps that support external search, same as the Search app. See the app list by country: About Search on your Apple TV - Apple Support

Siri search may have limited abilities in the current software version, as search results go through the Search app (see other threads on this for details). But this issue can be restored in a future version. We have no indication that this issue was intentional, as it is described differently in the documentation.

Bro, you’re the man. Thank you so much you need to start your own thread just for this. You have really made me feel good because I was really angry at Apple because they want to turn down my volume all the time because I’m listening to music too long or too loud I have to go through hoops just to repair my own Apple products with authentic apple parts and now they won’t let me use the Siri microphone but because you found this out that you just tap the microphone. God bless you you are awesome I was ready break all my Apple devices I was getting so angry whatever you do though don’t buy the Vision Pro they will own you once you put that beautiful device on your face, they will own everything about your life

I was greatly annoyed with this issue. That is why I found this discussion.

I have since did some testing and I figured out how to properly do it to make it work.

Right after you say the word or phrase you are searching for and it populates on the line above the letters, let go of the voice command prompt button!

I now get it to work 9 times out of 10 it seems to be a timing issue.

Again, right as the phrase or words you are searching for have completed populating let go of the button. It should work fine.

I hope this helps somebody. It really helped me.
