figuring out Pages after only using MS WORD

I am starting to use Pages because my new Mac won't run my MS WORD program.

I found something that works differently on Pages, that doesn't seem to let me do what I always did in WORD. It doesn't make sense that it cannot be done in Pages so I am hoping someone can help me.

I need to be able to draft a document using automatic numbering, (which I know how to do in Pages), and to have the first line of each new paragraph indented one tab-space from the left margin, (first line indent), but all remaining lines in the paragraph to start from the left margin. Essentially, I believe the technical term is that I need to be able to adjust the Hanging Indent to the left margin, to the left of where the first line begins, or basically to where I want it. I attached an image below, (Figure 1), of a WORD document that looks the way it is supposed to.

However, what I found when used Pages to open and work on what was created using MS WORD is that the left edge of all of the text in the numbered paragraphs is moved over one tab space. It is not correct for what I need. The second image (Figure 2) shows how that looks. In Figure 2, the Pages document, the left edge of the numbered paragraphs is too far to the right. I did adjust line 2, but it would not do what I want.

How can I adjust so that, when I am using automatic numbering, the number on the first line begins one tab over from the left, and the text starts one tab to the right of that, and that all subsequent lines in the paragraph begin out to the left margin; like the way it looks in Figure 1?

If my question is not clear, please don't be afraid to ask.

Thank you.

Not all word processing applications are created equal and just because Pages is provided by Apple does in no way implicate it as being the best tool for handling legal document layout, or faithfully importing a Word layout into a Pages layout engine.

Apple continues to adhere to their design mantra that Pages is for consumers, not professional usage. Microsoft has evolved Word over the last 39 years to meet its principal corporate customer requirements requests. Apple is not competing with any third-party word processing application and they can afford to be complacent in that arena.

I reproduced your two list entries in Pages v13.1, and in Word 16.75. I could not force an outdented alignment of list wrapped text to the left margin in Pages, and Word allowed it.

As I mentioned previously, Pages will waste your productive time trying to make it behave like Word.

Pages is not a Word clone and most features found in Word simply were never considered for Pages. That can have a profound effect on your opened Word documents formatting and productivity.

When you open an MS Word document in Pages, it will be translated into Pages own internal document format, and Apple does not guarantee full support of Word features, or even an accurate translation. The same thing happens in reverse when you choose to export a Word document from Pages. I never recommend Pages to anyone sharing Word documents with other MS Word users.

If you want to open Word documents in their native document format (without translation) or without a myriad of why questions about Pages) then stick to the current MS Word, or a close clone of Word such as Softmaker's Office 2024 for Mac.

There is the Pages User Guide for Mac - Apple Support if you are determined to stick with Pages, but it won't change the issues from above with real Word documents.

Okay. Thank you.

But Pages is the word processing application provided by Apple. And being able to format the appearance of paragraphs and sentences is a basic function.

The format I am asking about has been the format for legal documents since all we had was the typewriter, maybe, forever. I don't believe I've used another word-processing program that doesn't provide that ability.

Do you have any idea why Apple would not have such a basic function that is needed by all of its customers who work in the legal profession?

Thanks again, and for the link to the guide as well.
