How do you set the outgoing email server to exchange and not to the "on my mac" mailbox ?

I'm trying to setup an Exchange email account. Receiving emails is ok, but I can't have the outgoing emails sent from the Exchange mailbox. They all depart from the On my Mac outbox. I have setup the account properly I believe: the outgoing going Mail account has been set to the Exchange account.

The gold standard for fixing a misconfigured Microsoft Exchange account is to delete the account in Mail, and then add it again. Follow the numbered steps near the end of If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac - Apple Support, under "Remove your email account, then add it back."

I am a little curious about what you mean by an "On My Mac" Outbox. The Outbox is just a temporary depository for the email message until it is sent to the MS Exchange server. I mention this only because your Exchange email account may in fact be configured correctly.

Hi John,

Thanks a lot for your message. Yes the account was valid for the University. Actually the problem has been solved yesterday with the Apple Care advisor, after 2 hours looking for every options in Apple Mail we managed to reach a configuration where the tool managed not to be confused because they were 2 accounts with the same email address but 2 different protocols (1 Exchange, 1 IMAP). I disabled the IMAP account which was no longer used (but I wanted to keep the messages), and at some point, the composing window enabled to select the proper Exchange account for outgoing emails.

Thanks for your message. Actually I have already done what you suggest, with the sysadmin of my University near me to help. We have removed the Exchange Mail account using the Internet account form in System Preferences, and have re-created it, but it did not solve the problem.

I get a message from the server saying:

Cannot send message using the server ENAC Exchange

The sender address ****@enac.fr was rejected by the server

smtp.office365.com.

The server response was: Client not authenticated to send mail.

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.

I have of course double checked the password to enter the proper one.
