Updating Apple Watch

My Apple Watch has not been used for a while, it is a series 5 and my iPhone is update to iOS 16. I am trying to set up my watch but every time I try to update it says I have no internet connection although I do. I am stuck in a loop now and don’t know how to update

Apple Watch Series 5, watchOS 6

The standard advice for this problem is to remind you that the WiFi connection required is for your iPhone rather than the Apple Watch. If you are setting up from an unpaired watch it might not be able to get credentials from the iPhone to do the WiFi authentication until after the first setup is completed.

With that in mind, check your iPhone's WiFi connection and remember it must be a direct connection to a standard Home or Office Wifi, not a cellular hotspot from another device, not a VPN, not one of those horrible hotel and public WiFi schemes where you get a web based landing page.
