If I trash an item a box comes up and the line goes back and forth without stopping until clicking on the far right X. I cannot tell what triggers this behavior. It is cured by a cold boot, after which Trash will empty instantly, but eventually will reappear. It is a minor inconvenience. It does not appear to be caused by any of my anti-virus and cleaner apps, as running them does not make the behavior appear.

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX Foundation and Permission Limitation.
Starting in macOS 11 Big Sur and above.
The Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User nor by Third Party Applications.
The same would apply to CleanMyMac aka BrickMyMac
The only Entity that can open and modify or alter this Volume is Apple.
That would occur when a update or UpGrade is performed.
The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.
AntiVirus Developers purposefully Market their product to create a “ Fear Factor “. In so doing, creating a False Need for their Product.
The answer was not helpful to me, based on the apps I am familiar with. I have used ClamXAV and Sophos for several years with no problems. I have used CleanMyMacX since 2018 and it is the most useful app I have seen since I started with Macs in 1993. The name does not begin to describe the many useful functions that are not done by the built-in OS.
As for the Trash dialog box, after clearing its appearances with a cold boot, running CMMX does not cause it to reappear.
Perhaps not helpful to the User ( you ) but certainly helpful to the computer.
After all, that is what the sole purpose and focus of these Forums are about.

If that refers to CleanMyMac, I have experienced no issues of any kind with two computers running it since 2018. The Trash dialog is only on the iMac, and once cleared by a reboot, does not return after using CMM. We will have to look elsewhere.
