One of my airpods not being recognized by charging case or phone

The left airpod stopped working the other day. I tried to clean the end points with a clothe, but it is not recognized by the charging case or my iPhone. Every now and then (rarely) if I reboot holding the button for 15 seconds it will recognize the airpod, but the next day, nothing- besides being annoying, it also is always uncharged for obvious reasons.


I was wondering if the charging mechanisms at the bottom of the case were to blame, however, it doesn't explain why it sometimes can be recognized. Can iphone detect an airpod when it has no charge? I believe it can.


Any ideas?
