Stolen phone - device list and find my iphone

Hi. My phone was stolen 5 days ago. Thieves immidiately turned off my iphone 13 pro max. It was off for 5 days, but I had on this option - Find my iphone. So from my macbook and second iphone I bought I was able to check, if location of stolen iphone was changing. Of course immidiately after it was stolen I set "lost iphone" option and then "erase device".

Location of the phone changed today. In the morning thieves turned on my device 300 km from my city. I got specific location, but they immidiately turned it off. I got an email that erasing data from my device was successful, so at least I was sure my data was deleted but I was still able to track iphone (as it was newest iOS version).

Weird things started to happen in the evening (today). Suddenly I got email from Apple (real apple email) that "find my iphone" location was turned off on Iphone 14 pro max (new iphone which I bought 2 days ago). It was little shocking for me, as I had the location on and I didnt change anything. The email did not mention anything about stolen Iphone 13 pro max, only 14 pro max.

I went to settings in new 14 pro max, and it really was suddenly OFF. I switched back to ON, but then I noticed that my devices list doesn't show anymore stolen 13 pro max. Why?

Did the thieves removed somehow stolen phone from my devices list? How they turned off location on my new 14 pro max? Or they didn't do anything but as I erased via iCloud data from stolen iphone, it automatically after hours removed my 13 pro max from devices list? How does it work, what do you think?

What is surprising - 13 pro max is still visible in "find my iphone". I can see last location 300 km from my city. The device is still there, both on iCloud find my iphone, on "find my iphone" on both new 14 pro max and on macbook.

So my question is, why 13 pro max dissapeared from devices list but is still on "find my iphone". Will the stolen iphone be still tracked if they turn it on?

-Also extra information: Today my mother started to get sms on her android phone from Thieves from "Apple" which of course is not Apple. Text was " Dear Sandra, your device was turned on, log in to the website : (fake link).

It shows, that they try to get data for my iCloud. So, they don't know the data. We didn't click on the link or logged anywhere.

Please any feedback is welcome, sorry for my English...I live in Poland...regards.

Unfortunately, the email you received was NOT from Apple. You fell for a common scam. You got a text or email from “Apple” or “Apple Security” (or sometimes “Police”) saying your phone has been found and to click on a link to see its location. This is NEVER from Apple or from law enforcement; it is from the thief or fence to steal your Apple ID and identity. As soon as you clicked on the link and entered your Apple ID the thief removed Activation Lock, and also downloaded all of the data in iCloud, so go on the assumption that anything you had saved to iCloud is now in the hands of criminals. You should have deleted any such message without responding to it. Apple never gets involved in lost or stolen devices→Avoid phishing emails, fake ‘virus‘ alerts, phony support calls, and other scams

You didn’t say it still appeared on your device list (or if you did, I didn’t see it). If it does still appear, then the message that Find My had been deactivated was definitely from the thief. It can’t be tracked anymore if you erased it, but as long as you don’t delete it from your Apple ID the phone will never by usable by anyone.

If you followed the steps in the link below, did you do the last step that would remove your device from your list of Trusted Devices? This would be why it is no longer showing on your device list.

Also when you marked it as lost, did you provide any information or numbers to call if found?

If there is any chance that the Apple ID password is compromised, the OP should change it (to something the criminals are unlikely to be able to guess), ASAP.

The criminals may already have removed the Activation Lock and accessed personal data, but one would still want to lock them out from accessing new data, going forward.

After contacting with Apple Support here is the conclusion, so its good to know as everyone in replies to this topic was wrong.

  • The fact that 13 pro max is no longer in in list devices to my apple ID means ,that it was dissconnected. Why was it disconnected? Because I had erased via iCloud stolen 13 pro max (the last step after lost mode -> erase data ). However its still locked for the thiev because "find my" location is ON. So in application "find my" i can still see 13 pro max. IF i clicked that little trash icon and removed the device from there, it would automatically remove iCloud lock there and thiev can use phone as he wants to. So its important to keep things are they are right now.
  • Nobody had hacked to my iCloud account and I didnt log in into any links they tried to send me
  • Removing 14 pro max from "find my" was a bug probably.

The erasing message will be from Apple. The message that find my iPhone was turned off was NOT from Apple. The only way to turn off Find My is with the Apple ID and password for your Apple ID account. So somehow the thief got your Apple ID. The only other way that could happen is if the phone was unlocked when it was stolen, AND the thief knew the password (possibly by watching you enter it).

Forging email FROM fields is trivially easy. The only way to find the actual sender is by viewing the raw text of the message.

Years ago a friend was writing a techno-thriller, and asked me if it was possible to send an email that appeared to come from jon.knox@archon.com, but actually came from someone else. So I replied, and the reply to him came from jon.knox@archon.com.

Please tell me, why if he somehow got into my iCloud (why he had sent text sms to my mother) an 1hour before 13 pro max dissapeared from my device list? It means he didn't know log in data, so he tried to scam this way. We did not log in or enter that link.

Also main question I want to know - my stolen 13 pro max is still on find my iphone device list (there is a little red trash icon near it) will it be still tracked or it isn't valid anymore?

I followed all steps till the last one "erase your device" via iCloud. So the data from 13 pro max was fully removed in the morning today. I did not remove anything from trusted devices.

Now is evening here and like hour ago 13 pro max dissapeared from devices list ( second photo in the post ). However 13 pro max is still on "find my iphone". I am trying to find logic in this.

As I wrote many times, I did not get any email that said "track your location" from Apple or anything from the police.

All I got was today in the morning that data from my iphone has been erased. No link or nothing. And in iCloud now logging in I see its true information, data was erased from my iphone because they turned it on. (Erasing was in the process in the background without them knowing it). So up till now all fine.

All I want to know, if erasing data makes 13 pro max dissapear in devices list but still remaining on find my iphone which is now happening.

I could be wrong, but I think the little red trash can icon means that you made a request to erase the device.

I don't know if there would be any special-casing saying "keep the last Find My location for an erased device around, even if the device has been removed from the device list, and can now be erased and reused by the thieves." That may be a corner case so specific that Apple Support documents do not address it clearly, and you'd need to get Apple Support to raise the question with Apple Engineering to get an answer.
