HomePod won't factory reset

My original HomePod was showing as Installing in the home App. It couldn't talk to any HomeKit accessories. I Removed it from the Home App successfully. Then I tried a factory reset by unplugging for 10 seconds , Plugging it back in, and holding the top with a finger. It beeps but never shows a red light. It's no longer in the home app. It still can play music from my library. It thinks it is connected to the home because it tries to perform commands but claims the accessories are not responding. There is a HomePod mini acting as hub, that works fine. iPhones also work fine

How do I get it to factory reset?

This problem kicked my *** for a while. Below is a paste from a TuringTest2 post above. The 10 second thing after plugging in was clutch:

Reset HomePod or HomePod mini

  1. Unplug HomePod or unplug the power adapter for HomePod mini. Wait 10 seconds, then plug HomePod back in.
  2. Wait 10 seconds, then touch your finger to the top of HomePod and hold it there.
  3. The white spinning light will turn red. Keep your finger down.
  4. Siri will say that your HomePod is about to reset. When you hear three beeps, you can lift your finger.

Ahhhhhh….HomePods. SIRI does not indicate that the device is resetting. The device simply does its three beeps and then the drama begins. Will it or won’t it? How long does it really take? What is the problem…this time. Was it: Update? The eclipse? A solar flare at just the wrong time? Time to try the phone support crew. Otherwise, return them…..time is always precious. Done that, been there. I haven’t solved this curious issue. April 2024.

I’ve been successful with factory resetting 4~5 times over past 4 years. This time nothing after following procedure explicitly. …unplug, replug, 10 secs, white light, red light, finger, 3 beeps ….(hopeful) then nothing. So after Homewood knew all my contacts, podcast preferences, directions, which shops I use plus listened to all our conversations, it’s got enough out of me so nothing left but to self imploded. kcuf!

I think they’re wired to expire after a certain time, or after a certain amount of resets. Home environment same, haven’t given it any extra tasks. An observation : noticed lately it wasn’t able to connect to internet even though every other device can. I can only think it’s fatiguing, Apple’s way of saying “buy our next model” ❤️‍🩹 + 😖🤬😡

So add me to the list of unhappy HomePod owners. After I attempt to reset (unplug, 10 sec, plug in, 10 sec, hold until red) the device eventually goes dark, then later starts flashing white, and randomly makes the bong sound. It actually appears (sometimes) on my phone to setup, but without the display on top in the right mode, it cannot go forward. SUPER frustrating.

Mine worked fine until 17.5 (maybe, could have been before).

Any solutions? Apple not providing any support?

Update: I unplugged it for a month. I fired it up today, and things are in the same state. Get a red light, put finger on it, and eventually red goes out. Then it comes back and flashes white for a while, then makes its beautiful BONG sound, then repeats.

This really feels like a software bug. I have let it run for an hour, and it seems to follow a pattern. Super frustrating that our friends at Apple are ignoring this (and other) threads.
