Catch-22 iMessage Deregister Loop

When my iPhone broke, I put my sim card in a flip phone. When my flip phone could not receive text messages, I was told to deregister iMessage online. I went to the site and followed the instructions to deregister when you don't have your iPhone.

First step: Enter your phone number.

No problem!

Second step: Enter the code from the image, and we'll sent you a confirmation code.

I entered the code, and... it attempted to send the code in a text message to my phone.

Which cannot receive text messages.

Because I haven't deregistered iMessage.

Which I can't do until I receive a text message with the confirmation code.

Which can't happen, because my phone cannot receive text messages.

Because I haven't deregistered iMessage.

I do not have a second Apple device. I need to receive text messages on my phone. What do I do?

I eventually figured out the solution on my own. I called my provider (Verizon) and explained the problem. They looked at my account and discovered that my account was still "set up for a smartphone" and that, because I had switched to a flip phone, it needed to be "set up for a flip phone."

I don't know what the distinction between those is on Verizon's end, but according to the person I talked to, they had one. They switched my account to be "set up for a flip phone," whatever that means, I restarted my phone, and once that happened I could receive MMS and SMS messages.

This allowed me to receive a confirmation code from Apple when I went to Deregister and Turn Off iMessage - Apple Support. This in turn allowed me to deregister my number from iMessage, which allowed me to receive messages from Apple devices on my flip phone again. So if you're having a similar problem, be sure to check with your provider!

Where is the SIM with the Old Number, If it is not with you or you have given it back to the Carrier Service Provider, Then don't bother about it? Then de-registeration is not required and also not possible.

If you have it with you and want to use it with an Android device then put the SIM on any Phone (Apple or Android) and follow the GIF

Insert the same SIM into an Android or an iPhone. You may deregister iMessage online

Watch the GIF below. Here I have used another iPhone for the demo but for you, it may your choice. Android or iPhone device.

Why do you want to de-register? de-register is only done when you want to use the same SIM on a non-iOS device.

If you still have an iPhone and want to stop iMessages on that number simply go to

Settings > Messages > iMessage [Disable]

Settings > FaceTime > FaceTime [Disable]

That's it.

Probably you are wanting to remove this old number from Apple ID. If that is so watch the GIF below

You have brought some weird assumptions that do not apply to my situation, and it has negatively impacted the quality of your advice.

(1) My iPhone broke. I do not have access to that iPhone anymore, as it fell into water and disabled the display. So all of the things you are telling me to do on iPhone are a complete non-starter.

(2) I do want to "use the same SIM on a non-iOS device." I want to take the SIM in my iPhone 6s, and use it in my non-iOS flip phone.

(3) The "SIM with the old number" is the only SIM that exists in this scenario. I took the sim card from my iPhone and put it in my Nokia flip phone. So my flip phone has the number my iPhone used to have. When people call the number that used to be associated with my iPhone, my flip phone rings, and I answer the phone, and we can talk. When people send texts to that same number, I do not receive any of those texts. It doesn't matter if they are iMessages or SMS or MMS, they do not appear on my flip phone.

(4) I was troubleshooting this problem with my provider, and they said the most likely reason my flip phone could not receive texts was that I had not deregistered iMessage. So I tried to do this.

(5) The link you included to deregister is the exact same link I went to. I did not have access to my iPhone (see point (1) if you are confused about this), so I used the second set of instructions, under the setting, "No longer have your iPhone?" which accurately described my situation.

(6) When I tried to follow the steps under "No longer have your iPhone?" the page attempted to send a confirmation code to me via text. This was an issue, because my phone does not receive texts, which is the whole reason I am trying to deregister iMessage, and my phone never received the text with the confirmation code. So I was unable to deregister iMessage because I couldn't receive the confirmation code that would have allowed me to complete the process.

(7) Thank you for including the GIF. However, only half of it is applicable to my situation. A more accurate GIF would involve you clicking "send code" in the screen on the right, and then a text message never, ever shows up in the screen on the left (which is not running iOS or Android but rather KaiOS 3.1).

I want to de-register because I want to use the same SIM on a non-iOS device, as I explained above.

I do not still have an iPhone, so your next piece of advice does not apply to my situation.

I do not want to remove an old number from Apple ID. I want to use the SIM from my broken iPhone on a non-OS device. The problem is that de-registering the device requires me to receive a text, which I cannot do until I de-register the device.
