PC saves all files to iCloud shared folder into iCloud root directory

Whenever I modify or save a file or folder anywhere within a shared folder in iCloud on my PC, it gets moved back to my iCloud files root directory.

This does not happen when I save a file in a normal (not shared) folder in iCloud. This also does not happen on my Mac.

I am running Windows 11, and I believe the problem started recently.

BTW, internet is full of people complaining about this problem going back several years but they always get told they are saving the files in the wrong place (ie user error). Trust me, I am not!

Update for anyone wondering— the issue was resolved by replacing my current version of iCloud for Windows (version 7.xx) with the version from the Microsoft App Store (version 14.xx).

Turns out the manually downloaded version doesn’t update itself and stops working properly without informing the user.

Hi JasenFromNY,

With iCloud for Windows you can see where your files are stored and change the location with the steps below found in the article here: Set up iCloud Drive on your Windows computer

"Change where your files and folders are stored

Your files and folders are stored in C:\Users\[user name]\iCloud Drive by default. If you have iCloud for Windows 14, you can choose a different location.

  1. On your Windows computer, open iCloud for Windows.
  2. If iCloud Drive is enabled, deselect it, then click Apply.
  3. Click the Options button next to iCloud Drive, then click Change.
  4. Choose a different disk drive that’s formatted as NTFS, click OK, then click OK again.
  5. Click Apply."

You can also view helpful information and test pinning the file or folder with the information in the section "Download and view files" from the guide here: View, add or remove iCloud Drive files in iCloud for Windows as well as the guide page here: Keep iCloud Drive files downloaded on your Windows computer

As you mentioned you previously researched the issue, if you continue to have trouble reach out to Apple Support directly to further assist. You can get connected using the link here: Get Support
