relationship between a file on local drive and a file on desk top

I have the same file on my local drive and desk top. The desktop is sync to iCloud.

  1. Why when I delete the file on my desk top, the file on my local drive is also deleted?
  2. When I try to rename the file on my desktop (to be different than the file on my local drive), same thing, both files are deleted. Need help please. TY

I don't have "Sync this Mac" / "Desktop & Documents Folders" enabled – but I suspect that when you do, it is no longer accurate to refer to those folders as strictly "local" folders. It sounds like they become special views onto iCloud Drive, and follow synchronization rules much like the ones for it and for iCloud Photos.
