iCloud files on iMac are not updated like on other devices

I can see iCloud files on my iPad but when I look for new files on my iMac they are not there in some folders. These folders have a cloud symbol next to them and are not refreshed with the new files. They are in 'previous 7 days' How can I get them to update?

This isn't very clear to me. I think you're saying that some files that you're sure are in iCloud don't seem to be available on your Mac. Is that right? Have you checked at iCloud.com to be sure they are there?

But you also talk about folders, and I'm not sure what that means. Do you see the folders in the iCloud Drive on the Mac? You say the folders have a cloud symbol-- is that on the Mac or on your iPad, or what? What sort of cloud symbol is it, exactly.

On the Mac, If you turn on iCloud Status in Finder>View, you can see how each file is being handled. Here are some cloud symbols I see in iCloud Drive on my Mac:

Desktop is both local and at iCloud.com

photoslibrary is ignored because it's the not allowed in iCloud Drive

Rainbow stays only in iCloud until clicked

Album is kept always local as well as at iCloud

On my iPad, several folders have "only in iCloud" symbols, since my iPad has way less storage than my Mac. Also on my iPad, lots of smaller files have a "Downloaded" cloud symbol.

What happens when you click double click on one of your suspicious files?

Richard, thank you for this. I am still running Monterey 12.7.6 on my iMac (not wanting to update further because I have Lightroom 5) so the finder look may be different to yours.

I see folders like yours and the cloud symbol after them, yes. but not the description. On the folders that were not updated the cloud symbol was there with a down arrow (can't show this as it now seems to be all updated!) What i saw when I click on that folder is that it contains all the files there except the last ones I just added using my iPad. the iCloud had not updated on my iMac. That file had not been downloaded and did not exist nor have a document there with a cloud symbol and down arrow.

On my iPad when I have the cloud symbol with a down arrow on a document and then press the document it downloads it from iCloud - all very nice.

When I tried to press the folder on my iMac (which had the cloud symbol with the down arrow) it does not update the folder contents with the new file. I would have hoped it did that, maybe to just update the new file image and then let me click on it to download.

The only way I found to update the iMac was to restart the computer - then the finder iCloud list did update.

I tried a force quit on Finder - to no affect. Then tried a restart of my iMac and that seems to have sorted the problem for now. However, I would like to know if there is a simpler way to force iCloud to refresh itself and update rather than a restart!. I am connected via ethernet to the internet so it should not be a server connection problem.

It could well be Monterey-- some of this capability is new. In Sequoia, for instance, you can designate a file to always stay local (while updating iCloud as needed,) or you can set a file to always remain in iCloud so local storage is only temporary while it's in use.

The symbole description may also be new-- did you expand the column width to check?

I'm not sure folders behave like files. What happens if you click on a file in one of these folders?
