Multiple group text with same group name and members

There are 4 text groups showing in my iMessage with identical group name and identical contact members. The messages are not necessarily identical as they are some message(s) that might appear on one group but not on others. Why are there multiple text groups with identical group name and members? When does this happen? Thanks.

The number of contacts in each group could be different
Some may have an Apple ID instead of a Phone number. iMessage can be sent to an Apple ID
A contact may have multiple phone numbers and each group has a different phone number of a contact.
