IPad now Useless since Apple ID Not Valid

I haven't used my iPad Mini for a while and my Apple ID / iCloud ID is not recognised for no obvious reason. I get the message “This Apple ID is not active”. I have received no communication from Apple why this happened.

I tried to erase / reset the iPad but am locked out of doing anything since the iPad requires me to be signed into this iCloud account. It is totally unsatisfactory for this to happen. I don’t have this issue resetting any Microsoft device so why does Apple make life so difficult?

I'm now totally at the mercy of Apple support to reinstae the account. If they fail to do so I will left with a useless electronic brick and it will be the last Apple device I ever buy.

Also, why are Apple so hard to communicate with? In these situations I expect to be able to leave a formal complaint and escalate a complaint until it is resolved.

The account issue should have been resolved prior to resetting your iPad. Resetting an iPad when the associated AppleID account is locked risks being permanently locked-out of the iPad.

You now have two issues - which must be resolved in the correct sequence. Until you recover access to the AppleID account, you will not be able to resolve the Activation Lock that now renders the iPad unusable.

Account Recovery

Are you able to access your AppleID account using a web-browser from another computer?

https://appleid.apple.com

If you are able to access your AppleID account, you should be able to resolve the Activation Lock. Otherwise, if you can’t access your AppleID account, take note of any error messages or information that you may see - as this may help better identify the cause of the problem.

If you can’t access your AppleID account, fully follow this process:

If your Apple ID is locked or disabled - Apple Support

Activation Lock

Here are the Apple support pages that outline the Activation Lock - and the only mechanisms by which it can be satisfied:

Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Turn off Activation Lock – Apple Support

As you will discover, unless you are the owner of the AppleID that was last used to activate the device, you’ll not be able to defeat or bypass the Activation Lock. With documentary evidence that you are the original owner (such as sales receipt showing the serial number), Apple may be prepared to assist - otherwise they and nobody here will be able to help you.

If you have the necessary documentation, Apple have recently introduced a new portal though which you may be able to request release of an Activation Lock:

How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support & start an Activation Lock support request.

However, recovery of the AppleID credentials should be possible…

If you have forgotten your AppleID or associated password, these can be recovered here:

https://iforgot.apple.com/

To recover your credentials, you’ll need access to any one of the following:

  • Your primary email address mailbox that corresponds with your AppleID
  • Any of the secondary/recovery email addresses that should be configured for your AppleID account
  • Any of the trusted telephone numbers (fixed line or Cellular/Mobile) that are associated with your AppleID

You can request access into your device provided you have the original purchase receipt by starting an access request.

Start at iforgot.apple.com to try to regain access to your Apple ID.

Keep in mind that if it were easy to remove an activation lock or Apple ID from a device, it would be equally as easy to do so from stolen devices.

The Apple ID issue has now been resolved so I was able to proceed with the iPad reset and use it with a different Apple ID. Fortunately I had kept the receipt and evidence of the serial number. The risk of being locked out of the iPad will be unclear to most people including me and I'm tech savvy. I hate how Apple manages these devices and will not be buying any more of their products. It remains a mystery why the Apple ID problem happened since Apple have not bothered to explain it to me despite several requests which is poor customer support.

That link doesn't work - I get the message No Apple ID Found. I have the receipt although this does not state the iPad's serial number. Will this work on the right web page? I can send a photo of the box showing the serial number. The argument about stolen devices does not hold water since the device is protected by a password or other means. I can simply rest any Microsoft device so why does Apple make life so difficult?
