Just replaced old MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Air and didn't realize the new laptop doesn't have any USB ports! Is my external backup hard drive obsolete as well?

No, it is not obsolete! Simply buy an USB A To USB C adapter (you've got those for not all too much money) and you can use your old disk on your new MacBook
