Apple Studio Monitor Terrible Echo on Video Calls

I received an Apple Studio Display (27in) yesterday and have been using today with my MacBook Pro for several video calls on Google Meet.

All of the other attendees on the call are hearing a terrible Echo of themselves. When I turn on CC, I can see that the Monitors microphone is picking up the Monitors speakers and it’s typing out other people’s sentences as if it was me saying it.

I’ve ensured that I have the monitor selected as the mic input and speaker output at a system level and in google meet. I also have tried lowering the volume of the speaker and lowering the mic input volume but neither are stopping it.

I have never had this problem with the MacBook pro’s internal mic/speaker, AirPods, a Polycom speakerphone or any other device.

First step would be check & update firmware What’s new in firmware updates for Apple Studio Display - Apple Support. If that doesn’t fix, schedule an Apple in-store repair appointment, they should get to the bottom of it.

This is not likely a repair issue. Is it "really" an echo? Or does it sound more like you are in a cave?

The mic on the studio display is awful. This is just bad on Apple's part.

Don't take it for service because they will open up your display when they don't have to. That can introduce more issues and weaken seals and connections.

I hope they someday might shoot out an update with a fix for it. But my gut tells me it is poor hardware.
