Connecting Mac Studio to Dual Dell U2415 Displays, Short-Term Need

Greetings,

I need to connect two Macs both to dual Dell U2415 displays - an old 2010 mac Pro and a new Mac Studio M2 Max. The old Mac is currently connected to both displays via DisplayPort, and the new Mac to one display via HDMI.

I'll greatly appreciate your recommendations for a specific low-cost short (e.g. 3' or 6') cable that's known to work well; either Mac USB-C to Dell Mini DisplayPort, or Mac USB-C to Dell HDMI.

I assume that one of the Mac Studio M2 Max rear TB4 ports must be used but I'm fine with using a front 10GB USB-C port if this also works.

Thank you for your suggestions! Sky

I though you mis-spoke when you said the front USB-C ports could not run a [modest-sized] display.

So I checked the tech specs and was surprised to find you are quite right. I stand corrected.

On front (M2 Max):

  • Two USB-C ports (up to 10Gb/s)

That is USB 3.1 gen-2 spec, not nearly fast enough for the nominal 32 G bits/sec required for top displays. it appears those ports are not able to 'turn around' the inbound data path to obtain full USB-C 3.2 outbound speeds of nominal 20 G bits/sec.

--------

For drive support off those front USB-C ports, that implies 1,000 M Bytes/sec top transfer speed to a USB-C drive enclosure. Faster does indeed require genuine Thunderbolt. Because of the way computers Busses are connected to ThunderBolt ports, ThunderBolt-3 Macs can get up to nominal 2500 M Bytes/sec with an appropriately fast SSD drive in a ThunderBolt-3 enclosure.
