Alarm sound missing after iPhone iOS 17 update

I used to use the actual alarm sound listed under the classic sounds for when I set my alarm. I can't find where it's an option in the clock settings anymore. I have a severe hearing loss and it's the only sound I can hear. I've had to go back to using my vibrating alarm clock that goes under my pillow, which can give me challenges with my neck. Is there any way to get this sound option back?

I would note that I am running iOS 17.4 and I have the "Alarm" tone under "Classic". You'll find the Classic option all the way at the bottom of the Sound list in the Alarm clock.

It’s still there. It’s just in the “classic category” it is titled “radar”

It's there for use when setting an Alarm. However, a number of people in this thread who posted more recently that the Original Poster (who asked the question over a year ago and got an answer) want to use the "Alarm" sound for other types of notifications. It's not available for many of them.

With all due respect. We've ALL made it quite clear, that it doesn't matter what iPhone, iPad model we're using. It came out with the iOS 17 update. We ALL know we're talking about because we're ALL experiencing it.

In Settings> Sound & Haptics they changed the option for Ringtones. They've removed many of the favorites.

Now if go into your Clock icon, in the section where you set your alarm or Timer, where it says WHEN TIMER ENDS >, if you click on that it takes you to all of the original choices of ringtones (WITH ALL OF OUR FAVORITES THEY REMOVED IN SOUNDS & HAPTICS).

What we're asking APPLE to please do, is put back the ringtones options that are in the Timers & Alarms ringtones - into SOUNDS & HAPTICS.

There is that enough information for you?

The moderator needs to change the title of this back to “Alarm sound missing after iOS 17 update”. It isn’t that the author doesn’t know how to “install“ the “alarm” sound, but rather that the “alarm” sound is missing from iOS 17.

I am using an iPhone 13 Pro plus on iOS 17.2. When I started using iOS 17.0 I noticed that my “alarm” sound for my calendar alerts had disappeared. Alert sound “Alarm” sound is still available under classic ringtones. It is no longer available under calendar alerts. I think this comes down to an Americans with Disabilities Act issue for elderly and hard of hearing persons. Some of us are unable to hear low tones or high tones. A single sound like the “alert” have the intensity, and overall length to pierce my thoughts or draw my attention.

It makes no sense that they would delete what appears to be a very popular sound especially when it worked very well for the hard of hearing and the elderly. This was not the only sound that disappeared under the following categories:

New voicemail

Text tone

New mail

Send mail

Calendar alerts

Reminder alerts

Default alerts

As stated earlier, the only place the “alarm” sound remains is on ringtones.

Actually it first started with the *Crickets* sound effect that they removed. I used that for my text messages ringtone. Now they've removed the *Alarm* option in the sounds and haptics settings. I use the *Alarm* sound effect in my calendaer reminders and now I don't have it.

APPLE please listen to us! rodeoshooter hit the nail on the head with "stop messing with our sounds and give them back.  Instead of making it more options available you’ve gotten rid of people depend on."

I've always been an iOS iPhone user, but if I have to make the switch to Android and go with a Samsung S24 Ultra, I will.

Apple, are you there? Are you listening to us?

Missing alarm sound and other sound “alerts” for calendar

In iOS 17, they removed the “alarm“ for Calendar alerts under sounds.  They left this “alarm“ for ringtone, but deleted it for Calendar alerts.   This is the same on both the iPad and the iPhone.

It’s really frustrating as I depended on this “alarm” sound to notify me when I had an upcoming appointment.  I’m an elderly man who is hard of hearing.  When I spoke with an AppleCare individual, they said, because the alarm sound was too long, and it couldn’t be X number of seconds long.  I debunk that by playing several other sounds that were longer than the alarm in the same area under calendar alerts.

They also got rid of the “chime“ for calendar alerts.  Now, instead of a “chime“ I get a dull “thud” sound as a replacement of a “chime”.

i want you to stop messing with our sounds and give them back.  Instead of making it more options available you’ve gotten rid of people depend on.

No- you can’t. If I could I’d embed a screenshot here. All of the old (read: useful) alarms are gone. The only thing “classic” to be found are some of the haptics rhythms- but that’s irrelevant re: a wake-up alarm.

this is very poorly done, Apple. I don’t even see a way to use a custom sound of any kind, like a song or a sound effect .wav file.

Very poorly done, Apple.

Thanks for the link! I'm in the process of exploring my options, I'll probably start by trying some of the other mail apps that people tout as being better than iOS Mail to see if they offer any solutions. It's just so aggravating that this tone was working fine for so many users–including myself–and all Apple had to do to not break its utility is leave it alone, but they couldn't manage it. I'm just trying to imagine the pitch session and what the thought process was, "We should take the tone people are using for accessibility and critical alarms and remove it, because..." ???

I really like Spark by Readdle, but it doesn't allow you to select a custom sound.

Different people are going to find different sounds useful. It's going to depend on your physical capacity and temperament. I only ever used Alarm for an alarm is it's kind of frightening (which I need to get out of bed). It would annoy me a lot if people around me used it as an alert. People with age-related hiring loss may do better with lower-pitched noises.

I found that almost all of my notification issues were resolved when I got an Apple Watch. It's set on silent, and I use the haptics to let me know about things. But other people find the watch doesn't work for them.
