Someone deleted the entire iMessage thread (a year of convo) off my phone, as well as theirs

I didn’t even know this was possible, but someone who I had been friends with blocked me today and then I guess they deleted the entire history of our iMessages for not only them but also on my side as well. An entire year worth of texts. The only texts left are green texts, not any blue iMessages. Somehow they deleted the iMessages I sent, as well as theirs, which is also weird.

I’m still shocked and confused how this even works, and how they did this. Can someone please explain, because I’m kind of freaked out. Do they somehow have access to my phone or is this truly a new weird feature of the current iOS? It just seems like a wild amount of power to give to another person, to delete texts off YOUR device.

I currently have iOS 16.3.

Troubleshooting Lost Messages:

What to Consider:

A. Check "Recently Deleted":

Having iOS 16, look in "Recently Deleted"

B. Restore from Today's Backup:

Restore your iPhone from a backup of it that contains these messages, and you could recover them.

C. Check Messages App:

If messages was enabled on your iPhone along with your Apple computer, then check and see if the Messages app is enabled on your Mac to see if it exists in it. You'd start up your Mac, not connecting to the Internet, and open the Massages app. Then proceed from there with retrieving it. Important: Be certain you do not connect to the Internet while booting up, as syncing would delete it. So, power off your router to avoid the connection.

Elsewise, if they're gone, they're gone. That's just the way it is :(
