I turn on Do Not Disturb, but phone calls still get through.

I thought Do Not Disturb would prevent phone calls from getting through. This help page seems to be saying that it only stops notifications. Sometimes I want to really not be disturbed. Do I need to turn my phone off completely?

Do Not Disturb setup has been made much more flexible, but this has come at the cost of much more complication. To get it working again, do these steps ONCE:

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Focus
  • Tap on any Focus settings that you will never use and remove them (you can add them back later if you change your mind, and even create new, custom ones)
  • Tap Do Not Disturb
  • Tap People
  • Tap Allow Notifications From
  • If anyone is listed who should not call you when DND is on delete them; if you don’t want any calls from anyone, any time, delete all people
  • Tap the dropdown next to Allow Calls From and choose Allowed People Only
  • Optionally, tap on Apps, then Allow Notifications From and don’t add any apps.

All of the above is a one-time setup. After that, turn DND on or off with the Control Center Focus button. You can optionally set one or more schedules by going to:

Settings/Focus/Do Not Disturb/Set a Schedule.

Why am I getting calls with? Do not disturb on?

Most likely because you haven’t programmed Do Not Disturb correctly.

There are many other features, but these instructions put it back to the way it worked in simpler days. Over the years Apple has had a steady stream of requests for DND enhancements, and they seem to have incorporated all of them.

I had a similar issue, but it was my kids that could still get through when I wanted it to be totally silent (at a play). Turns out it was because, years ago, I had turned on Emergency Bypass in their contacts. That was the old way of letting someone through DND, but it was breaking the new way.

I also had to remove everyone from favorites because they had been added years ago. When I added them back I only added their number for calls. Then I set DND to no one allowed, but calls allowed from favorites. That way they can get through at night when it’s important enough for them to call, but their texts don’t wake me up.

Another thing you may NOT be aware of is if you tap the favorites or the people in your favorites.

Under that there will be “ALLOW CALLS FROM” It’s automatically set to favorites.

& Of course I certainly have select family set to favorites as well as friends.

Tap that and select (ALLOWED PEOPLE ONLY).

That way only the ones that are listed if any can call in case of an emergency.

I truly hope that helps 😊.

I, too, am getting unwanted calls when my Do Not Disturb Focus is on (iPhone 13 mini, iOS 16.6). However, this has happened only while traveling internationally. I have an international travel SIM card and an e-SIM for my U.S. cellular provider, both active while traveling. My U.S. cellular provider supports WiFi calling. Calls over WiFi to my U.S. phone number are not being blocked when Do Not Disturb is on. I suppose that I could turn off WiFi each night but I had expected Do Not Disturb to block all phone calls.
