Then you're in a MMS group if you can't leave or in a small group of less than 3 people, as outlined here Leave a group text message thread on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Thanks for this. Its a group of 3 and not an mms group as far as i can tell. i did however add my email to the i message (trying to make a group of 4) and that worked so that the 'ungreyed' "Leave Conversation" could be activated. i dont think it made a group of 4 but it did remove my phone number as the primary one and replaced it with my email. so done. thanks for the tip!
