Share files between a Windows and Mac

Turn on both the Mac and PC computers, and ensure that they are connected to the network.Click the Apple icon, then "System Preferences" and then "Sharing" or on your Mac.

The Sharing window appears.Write down your Mac's IP address. It is located under the "Windows Sharing: On" section of the file sharing window, denoted by "afp:\192.168.1.102" where "192.168.1.102" represents your Mac's real IP address.

Move to your Windows computer.Press "Ctrl-R" to start the Run dialog.

Enter the following text into the Run dialog, where "192.168.1.102" represents the Mac IP address you wrote down previously:\192.168.1.102

Enter your Mac's username and password when prompted. A window appears listing all shared folders on the Mac.

(When using a firewall, it must be configured to allow the IP address of your Mac to connect. You can test this by trying to connect with your firewall temporarily off.)

  1. Open System Settings on your Mac.
  2. Click Sharing.
  3. Toggle on File Sharing. Unlock sharing settings using your login credentials, if necessary.
  4. Click on the information icon at the right of the File Sharing toggle.
  5. Choose the Options... button.
  6. Check the box next to your device username. You might also have to log in with your Mac password.
  7. Select Done.
  8. Next, click the "+" under Shared Folders.
  9. Choose the folder you wish to share with a Windows device on your network. For example, Documents.
  10. Select Add.

Once you've done all this, the username you selected in the previous steps should be listed under the Users section. Confirm that the user has, at the minimum "Read & Write" access. If it doesn't, click on the user and change the rights setting.

I've been trying to do this unsuccessfully since we got our modern Macs in 2015.

Regardless of all the tricks in the book, I have never been able to make it work. My feeling is the problem is with Windows. But since we hardly ever use the one Windows machine we have, I stopped trying.

And this is true for all macOS versions starting with OS X 10.11 right up through 13.5
