How can I fix my iPhone's overheating and lagging problems without buying a new one?

My phone has recently started overheating. It’s lagging bad as well. I don’t have the money to purchase a new iPhone. Anyone else have this problem?

Hey Charli

I understand that software upgrades (16 to 17) can be frustrating since compatibility can lag behind with older devices but don’t worry that is something that apple software engineers are always on the lookout to patch with incremental updates (ex. 17.4 pr 17.4.1)

what you can do is make sure that analytics and data are set on and to be shared with apple so the apple software engineers receive bug infos or defective codes asap here is how you can do it:

go to Settings > Privacy, scroll down, and tap Analytics or Analytics & Improvements. Then tap Share iPhone & Watch Analytics

You can also call Apple Support as well

Keeping automatic updates (under settings > general > software update) on is the first advice I have for you in order to receive the latest improvements on the software

Secondly here are a few settings that could help with your iPhone performance starting from:

  • Deselecting background app refresh for apps u don’t want to be active in background:

Settings > General > Background App Refresh

  • Another issue that might cause performance decrease is also app tracking:

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking

  • Location services too:

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > choose to never for apps that don’t need to recieve your location

  • Check your storage as well because that might be causing the issue too:

Settings > General > iPhone storage

  • Feel free to check this guide as well for more detailed help:

If your iPhone or iPad is running slow - Apple Support (IN)

Hope this helped resolve or at least ease your issue

Here are some reasons why an iPhone 12 might overheat:

  • Processor-intensive activities
  • Running multiple apps, streaming HD video, gaming, or using GPS navigation can all make your iPhone work harder and generate more heat.
  • Outdated software or apps
  • Outdated software can strain your processor and cause overheating.
  • Direct sunlight
  • Using your iPhone in direct sunlight for an extended period of time can significantly increase its internal temperature.
  • Damaged battery
  • A damaged battery may appear swollen, have a reduced capacity, and show signs of overheating. You can check your iPhone's battery health by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If your battery's maximum capacity is below 80%, you may need to replace it.
  • Lack of ventilation
  • If your iPhone doesn't have enough space or ventilation while charging, heat generated by internal components can't escape and can get trapped.

When you say overheating, that has a specific meaning for an iPhone: It means the phone’s temperature has exceeded the safe operating range, and the phone will shut off and display a message saying it has to cool down.

In normal operation the phone can get quite warm, but if it doesn’t actually shut down it has not overheated.

If you fast charge it the phone will pause charging at 80% and display a message saying that charging has paused to allow the phone to cool down. This is normal and expected.

The phone can also get quite warm in use if you are watching videos or you have a weak cellular connection. Do any of these apply to your situation?

I really started noticing how hot my iPhone 12 would get while playing with the BackBone controller attachment running games. NBA 2K24 the most makes it almost unbearable to touch at times with a lot of frame rate stuttering. This seems common as I’m reading I just hope the battery can hold up over time against all the extreme degradation. I’m coming from an iPhone 11 that never really got too hot.

Yes, only had mine for 6 months. It got so hot I couldn’t hold it without being burned. Put it in a towel, turned it off, let it cool down. Now it won’t turn on. Looks like it melted some of my screen. Apple won’t fix it. They tried saying it was water damage but I never had it submerged in water AT ALL! They’re trying to cover up the failings of their phones and updates.

No when I try to play any games, I can play for 2-3 minutes max before the game extremely lags (5-10fps) and just closes after a while. Even insta heats the phone a lot. If the phone keeps heating up like this battery will die quicker and battery’s health will also decrease. My hands sweat a lot. This phone is really great and now I’m stuck with my iPhone 12 for another 3 or so years. I’m very disappointed not only by iPhones but even with the galaxy s21 ultra which stopped working last year due to dead motherboard even after being my secondary phone

My iPhone 12 Pro Max has started getting very hot lately. Has not shut off due to overheating, but almost too hot too hold if I don't have a case on (which I take off when it starts to get too hot). It gets extremely hot when I'm on FaceTime and my picture starts to lag bad. And when I play games it gets very hot. I'm trying to hold off on getting a new phone until the 16 comes out because I heard there's a Barbie Pink one coming out, but I might have to give in. I'm scared that I'm going to wake up and have a hole burned through my bed. It's frustrating because it didn't do this before.

Hi I just got a new IPhone 15 yesterday and at the Xfinity store it took a long time to transfer my data . They said IOS 17 had a bug ! then three of the customer service reps were concerned but what ever it was ? It finally all got solved . My old XR wasn’t talking to my new phone I was there 2 hours and finally they did it ! It seems to be cooling down right now PTL. 🙏🥰
