My phone has recently started overheating. It’s lagging bad as well. I don’t have the money to purchase a new iPhone. Anyone else have this problem?

I understand that software upgrades (16 to 17) can be frustrating since compatibility can lag behind with older devices but don’t worry that is something that apple software engineers are always on the lookout to patch with incremental updates (ex. 17.4 pr 17.4.1)
what you can do is make sure that analytics and data are set on and to be shared with apple so the apple software engineers receive bug infos or defective codes asap here is how you can do it:
go to Settings > Privacy, scroll down, and tap Analytics or Analytics & Improvements. Then tap Share iPhone & Watch Analytics
You can also call Apple Support as well
Keeping automatic updates (under settings > general > software update) on is the first advice I have for you in order to receive the latest improvements on the software
Secondly here are a few settings that could help with your iPhone performance starting from:
Settings > General > Background App Refresh
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > choose to never for apps that don’t need to recieve your location
Settings > General > iPhone storage
If your iPhone or iPad is running slow - Apple Support (IN)

When you say overheating, that has a specific meaning for an iPhone: It means the phone’s temperature has exceeded the safe operating range, and the phone will shut off and display a message saying it has to cool down.
In normal operation the phone can get quite warm, but if it doesn’t actually shut down it has not overheated.
If you fast charge it the phone will pause charging at 80% and display a message saying that charging has paused to allow the phone to cool down. This is normal and expected.
The phone can also get quite warm in use if you are watching videos or you have a weak cellular connection. Do any of these apply to your situation?
Me too! My iPhone 12 Pro is on the latest IOS 17 update and just watching YouTube it’s sorta starting to heat up pretty fast and after a while it started to throttle playing games also heats up the phone a lot after like 3 minutes it’s starts to become unplayable (games like Roblox.)
My iPhone 12 Pro Max has started getting very hot lately. Has not shut off due to overheating, but almost too hot too hold if I don't have a case on (which I take off when it starts to get too hot). It gets extremely hot when I'm on FaceTime and my picture starts to lag bad. And when I play games it gets very hot. I'm trying to hold off on getting a new phone until the 16 comes out because I heard there's a Barbie Pink one coming out, but I might have to give in. I'm scared that I'm going to wake up and have a hole burned through my bed. It's frustrating because it didn't do this before.

Hi I just got a new IPhone 15 yesterday and at the Xfinity store it took a long time to transfer my data . They said IOS 17 had a bug ! then three of the customer service reps were concerned but what ever it was ? It finally all got solved . My old XR wasn’t talking to my new phone I was there 2 hours and finally they did it ! It seems to be cooling down right now PTL. 🙏🥰
My phone won’t charge because it is hot, I get the pop up notification that charging will pause until the phone has cooled down.
Same, and it’s quite unbearable because these iPhones are expensive and apparently “premium”.
