macOS Mojave Startup Disk Cannot be found…

MacBook Pro with BootCamp install only launching Windows. Hello, I seem to be experiencing a similar issue to the following post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251412540?&previousThread=251672396021 but would like to confirm next steps in my particular case. (My background: I have a 2020 13” Pro, model A2289. I’ve run bootcamp for over a year with no issues. At some point I ran into a documented bug with an application I was running that required me to partition off some of its files and run a symbolic link to them. When an update fixed that I thought I’d get rid of the partition and…the windows utility i tried to use seems to have dropped it into the Mac reservoir instead of merging it back with my main windows partition, hence problems. Option key on restart shows only Windows, NVRAM doesn’t work, recovery mode shunts me into internet recovery. So far seems to be similar enough to the link above that the same ought to apply.) From terminal in internet recovery mode, diskutil list returns the following: and gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1 returns so from the code in the post I’m referencing, I’m hoping that gpt remove -i 2 /dev/disk1 gpt add -i 2 -b 76806 -s 102295034 -t apfs /dev/disk1 gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1 diskutil repairDisk disk1 (unmounting if necessary) will solve my issue. But I’m in far enough over my head that I’d really appreciate the eyeballs of someone with real knowledge of what’s going on here. I did try to run first aid with no success: and I do have a full backup of my computer that’s a couple months old but isn’t missing anything important, should I need it. Thanks again -

Cannot boot or recover MacOS (even from USB installer drive or internet) after Boot Camp installation Hi all - I have searched the forum but (so far) cannot find any answers to this particular problem. My friend's teenage son installed Boot Camp on his 2019 MacBook Air. Since doing so, he has been unable to boot back into MacOS. He gave it to me to have a look, and here's what I found: 1- Windows boots fine, but there are two Windows 10 installations to choose from on startup. One works and launches the Windows 10 desktop, the other produces (Windows-based) error messages and offers to fix the corrupted drive instead. From the Windows desktop that does work, I noted that there is no D: drive (no MacOS partition), and there is no "Boot Camp" app in the Task Bar ^ menu. I did find the Boot Camp app under "Program Files" and ran it. The Boot Camp control panel showed up, and I could select MacOS from there. But here's where it gets interesting: 2- When booting up into MacOS, I get a momentary spinning circle (dots) after which the computer reboots - this cycle keeps repeating itself to no end. 3- When booting the MacBook while pressing Option/Alt, I *do* see two partitions: "Macintosh HD" and "Windows". If I choose Macintosh HD, I get the spinning circle/reboot cycle. 4- If I restart the Mac while pressing command-R to get to the recovery drive, I again just get the spinning circle/reboot cycle. I cannot boot into the Recovery partition. 5- I created a bootable USB drive (using Monterrey) and plugged it into the MacBook. I then started up the Mac pressing Option/Alt, and I saw all three options ("Macintosh HD", "Windows", and the Monterrey startup disk). When I select the USB startup disk, it restarts, and I get the momentary spinning circle/reboot cycle again. I cannot boot the Mac using an external USB startup disk. 6- I started up the Mac while pressing Command-Option-R to get to the Internet Recovery. The spinning globe appeared and asked me for the Wifi name and password. I entered these and the normal progress bar appeared with the "This may take a while..." message. Once the progress bar completed ~15 min later, I did not see the menu; instead, the system rebooted and the same spinning globe appeared asking again for the WiFi name/password - and this cycle again kept repeating. I tried this in two different locations (two different Wifi routers), and got the same result. As such, I cannot access Internet Recovery from this Mac! 7- Lastly, I turned the Mac on while pressing the T key to get into Target Disk mode. The USB and FireWire icons appeared on the screen floating around as normal, but the Mac is not recognizable when I plug it into 2 different Macs that I tried (it is like I never connected anything; no HD icon, no nothing). Placing the Mac in Target Disk mode renders it undetectable by other Macs. 8- Resetting the power management did not help. However, when I reset the P-RAM, I did get the Apple logo upon reboot instead of the spinning circle, only for it to disappear after a few seconds; the Mac then restarted, Apple logo again, restart, Apple logo, endless cycle. So even if I wanted to format/reinstall MacOS on this MacBook Air, I am at a loss how to do so since I cannot even boot from an external source (USB or internet). Again, Windows *does* work. It is as if the Mac's firmware has been zapped to an extent that it doesn't recognize *anything* Mac. I would appreciate any clues. Thanks.

Solution for macOS installation stuck at "Less than a minute remaining..." (Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur...) Hi everyone, I've recently faced the problem related to a macOS installation stuck at "less than a minute remaining" with a 27-in 2017 iMac, and it took me 2 days to finally sort it out. Today I'd like to share some troubleshooting guidelines to help people having the same issue -- as thoroughly reported in: Big Sur installation stuck at "Less than … - Apple Community I know there are tons of other articles and YouTube videos about this, but none of them was decisive in bringing me to the solution. Many of them present some nonsensical, potentially harmful steps to take. First, some context. Suddenly, after a fresh boot my macOS Ventura started to become very slow and hanging without any apparent reason. It was even impossible to reboot it from the Apple menu. So I manually powered it down. After booting up again, it wouldn't go past the login window for any user: After the password, the loading bar would get stuck at half way, and after about 15 min the system would crash and reboot by itself. After many attempts to log in, I decided to reinstall the system. Installation attempt: Ventura via Recovery Mode. I rebooted into local Recovery Mode (Cmd + R during boot) to reinstall macOS. But after a whole night, the installation just wouldn't finish. I then rebooted the machine, but whenever I tried the Recovery Mode, the screen would get stuck at the Apple logo. I followed: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support Installation attempt: Internet Recovery Mode with Sierra. As the normal Recovery wouldn't load, I then tried the Internet Recovery (Opt + Cmd + R.) To my surprise, macOS Sierra was listed as installation choice (probably the one that shipped with iMac.) Anyway, I tried it. But after quite a while, the installation failed and started showing a "question mark folder" during boot: Installation attempt: Ventura via external bootable USB driver. Afterwards, I created a bootable USB driver with the Ventura installer, as per Apple's instructions on the Support KB: Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support I decided to perform a clean install. I erased my HDD (a 2 TB Fusion Drive) and formatted it as APFS (the recommended format.) However, this attempt wouldn't be any different from the first one: Installation stuck at some point, manual reboot, then stuck again... And all that after 4h of installation time. Installation attempt: Big Sur via external USB driver. This time, I tried to go back a few macOS versions and give Big Sur a try. However, I could't even try to install it, as it wouldn't connect to my Magic Mouse 2. As I don't have any other pointing device, I had to give it up. Installation attempt: Monterey via external USB driver. Same setup as above, but with Monterey. This time, I could proceed with the installation. I erased the HDD and checked it with Disk Utility's First Aid. However, after a while, differently from the other attempts, the installation resulted in some errors that enabled me to dig deeper into the cause of the matter. I was starting to think that my HDD was defective. "Storage system verify or repair failed (error 69716)" and no disk showing in the list of Startup Disks... See below: Fixing a split Fusion Drive After some research, I found out that in some cases, a Fusion Drive (hybrid HDD + SSD) can get split up and stop functioning as it should. So I rebooted the computer, booted from the external USB Monterey installation, and opened Disk Utility. Indeed, it showed two local storage devices: A 2 TB HDD and a 128 GB SSD. Apparently, the contents of the said SSD can be erased without any trouble, as they're supposed to be recreated again by the OS, automatically. See: How to fix a split Fusion Drive - Apple Support So, as per the article above, I opened the Terminal and typed: diskutil resetFusion After a while, the two volumes were erased and the disk structure was recreated as APFS. Installation attempt: Monterey via external USB driver (2nd time). Again, I launched Monterey installation. It quickly reached the same point: "less than a minute remaining." Just like the other attempts, I left it there for a while. About 1h30 later, it finally finished the installation and the system booted up successfully! Conclusion and key takeaways. Do not turn off or reboot the computer, even if the installation seems stuck. Leave it there for 2 or 3h to make sure it is definitely faulty. Also, check your target disk with First Aid in Disk Utility. It's not perfect, but can detect major faults. Finally, make sure that your Fusion Drive is not split. If so, merge it again. Consider a fresh, clean install instead of just reinstalling. It's much more time consuming, but can avoid some pesky issues. And always backup your data and system with TimeMachine. * * * I hope this article may help the thousands of people having the same problem, and that Apple might take a more serious look at this issue.
