MacOS photos sync slow and unreliable

Are other users having problems with MacOS Photos sync? I find it's slow and unreliable. It's been consistently like this for 6-12 months across a a variety of WiFi networks. I have a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro which is kept updated regularly.

Example A:

I added about 10 x 10MB photos to my MacOS Photos app 15 minutes ago. It still hasn't synced them ("Last synced 28 minutes ago"). There is no way to manually trigger the sync and I've tried closing and reopening the app multiple times.

Example B:

I make edits to photos and videos on my MacOS Photos app. It reports that the library is fully synced. Yet when I go to my iPhone or iPad, the edits do not appear.

Example C:

If I upload a video (e.g. a 30-60 second 4k video) to the MacOS Photos App, it takes hours to upload. I now leave the MacBook plugged in overnight to do the upload.

I don't have any such problems when I upload or edit photos/videos on my iPhone or iPad. I've spoken to Apple Support about this multiple times and they can't find any problem, which leads me to suspect the problem lies with MacOS Photos + iCloud. Have others had similar problems with this? If so, what did you do to overcome it? Or what alternative setup did you use?

You described my experience precisely. Any solutions?

That is o.k. then. And Photos should definitely sync over Wi-Fi, as long as you are not using your iPhone or iPad as a personal hotspot.

Have you checked, if you have removed all files in a Legacy format from your Photos Library on your Mac? Photos may pause with the syncing and get stuck, if you are having older videos of photos in your library, imported on older system versions, that still supported the older formats. You may want to test all videos, if you can edit them or play them; videos with the codecs shown as H.264 or HEVC should be save.

To test a video, export if from Photos with "File > Export > Export unmodified original", then try to reimport it into a different Photos Library created for testing. Any item that cannot be reimported to a test library needs to be removed from your iCloud Photos Library. Convert these items to a supported format.

Older photos can also create problems. I had to remove all PDFs from my library. also some scanned TIFFs, where the scanner had some color sync profiles embedded, that are no longer supported.
