SpamSieve - My Horrific C-Command Software Experience

I began using SpamSieve by C-Command Software nine months ago yet the number of spam emails I received increased significantly.

I contacted C-Command Software support but the answers directly contradicted those contained online and in the SpamSieve Manual.

Frustrated, I uninstalled SpamSieve and much to my relief the number of spam emails I received immediately declined to the pre-SpamSieve level.

SpamSieve has excellent online reviews but given my horrific experience, I question their validity, the true purpose of C-Command Software, and strongly recommend not using SpamSieve!

I wish I knew which customer you were so that I could look into why you thought the answer that I gave you contradicted the manual. I will say that SpamSieve supports many different e-mail apps and versions of macOS, and so advice for one configuration may be incorrect or not relevant if you have a different configuration.

It should go without saying, but installing SpamSieve does not change how many messages you receive. All the app does is move them out of your inbox after they’re already on your Mac. We do not have a way to control how many messages the spammers send to you based on whether the app is installed.

C-Command Software

My own experience has been just the opposite. I've been using SpamSieve on my iCloud email, other IMAP email accounts, gmail, and a POP account since 2019 and it works great for me. The few times I had problems, the C-Command Software developer (Michael Tsai) always provided a fast and useful response.

For anyone who may be interested, here are my mail filtering statistics since 6/2022:

If I look at more recent statistics (since 6/1/23), the accuracy is increased due to training performed before that date:

Leave the Mac running all the time, so that SpamSieve is running all the time. That is how spam filtering is done for all mail clients and all devices sharing the mail account.

All spam filters take time to build up knowledge of what mail the recipient wants, and what mail the recipient doesn’t. This process is called “training”. There will be both false negatives (erroneously marked as not-spam) and false positives (erroneously marked as spam). Use Mark as Spam and Mark as Not Spam for misclassified mail messages, and the statistics-based filtering will adjust and become better.

Some mail providers do offer server-based spam filtering, some including server-based spam-filtering tools such as SpamAssassin. This approach avoids needing a local computer running full-time to filter for iPad and iPhone devices; for mail clients not running spam filtering. But SpamAssassin itself requires tuning and configuration.

A search for “remove SpamSieve” finds this: https://c-command.com/spamsieve/help/uninstalling-spamsieve

I’ve been using SpamSieve for many years (on a Mac that runs full time), and the occasional spam does still leak through. The spammers are highly motivated and only get paid when enough of their rubbish bypasses spam filters, of course. But SpamSieve does quite well, looking at all the rubbish in the spam folder.

Try AppCleaner…

https://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner

I never tried Sam Sieve, I use spamcop.net to reprt the spam & eventually get the spammers to remove you from their mailinglist, cost $15 to report oodles, it'll take a bit if you've always been allowing spam. Also if the spam includes PayPal the'll snuff them out pronto...

“Phishing” is an illegal attempt to "fish" for your private, sensitive data. One of the most common phishing scams involves sending an email that fraudulently claims to be from a well-known company (like PayPal). If you believe you've received a phishing email, follow these steps right away:

  1. Forward the entire email to phishing@paypal.com.
  2. Do not alter the subject line or forward the message as an attachment.
  3. Delete the suspicious email from your email account.

I've been a SpamSieve user since 2007:

This has been the best spam solution for my needs: I receive messages in Spanish and English and other systems have been unable to deal with that combination.

Over the years my installation has only getting better, by adapting itself to the spam I receive, and by the constant care that Michael Tsai himself puts in the updates to the program.

Moving my installation from my old Mac to a new Mac mini M2 running Sonoma was a bit convoluted, and I managed to get it right after some configuration tests: the docs are well written and to the point and I was able to preserve almost 20 years of spam training. I've also asked for tech support and has received it promptly.

These are the best $50 dollars I've invested in any software over that long period of time ($30 for the original software in 2007, $19.99 for the update in 2023)

Kudos To Michael for the excellent job done over all these years! 👏🏼

This is highly surprising

SpamSieve (like most software) is not perfect. At times things get out of whack, Apple makes major updates its OS (e.g. MountainLion to Maverick, Mojave to Catalina, Big Sur to Sonoma etc) & it takes a while to get a new release out, users do things that "interfere" with SS operations etc

And, Michael of C-Command Software has to be one of the BEST in the business as far as technical support is concerned. He is reponsive (responses usually within 12 hours or less), very happy to help and has got me out of a jam many times.

For anyone battling with spam, SS is (by far) one of the best on-device solutions for Mac

I had been limping along with a “wonky” email experience

+ Mail freezing

+ Mail crashing

+ miscellaneous other issues

I sent a message to Michael. He quickly identified a bug in the latest version of Apple Mail and sent a link to a beta version of SpamSieve

Not only did the SS update solve the problem, email behaviour is far smoother & spam is identified & filtered more quickly

IF you install the program, IF you carefully follow the instruction and IF you train SS what’s spam, you should have a near flawless secure on-computer experience

(And no I have no financial relationship with C-command other than. being a happy customer)

I have a couple of issues with SpamSieve. I installed it on my Mac and it works fine, although I still need to regularly review my Inbox and Spam folders. However because I also look at eMails on my iPhone or iPad, SpamSieve doesn't resolve the Spam problem for me as it only filters on the Mac.

Now I have another problem, I decided to uninstall SpamSieve and use the Junk mail filter on the Mac. However, moving the SpamSieve application the trash folder doesn't uninstall it from the Mac as their some process still running on the background that is filtering my eMail and placing items into the SpamSieve Spam folder. How do I eliminate SpamSieve completely?

I did not drag the application icon to the Trash folder, I clicked it and selected Move to Trash, I don't know whether or not that makes the uninstall process behave differently. And I cannot delete the Spam folders mailbox. How do I eliminate SpamSieve completely?

After you’ve been correcting the mistakes for a while, it should be very accurate. If you are still finding that good messages are going to the spam mailbox, that might be because of a server filter. You can also send in a diagnostic report so that we can advise you.

If the mail accounts are set up properly, when the Mac is running, SpamSieve will remove the spam from all the devices. There’s more information about that here.

It’s not that SpamSieve is still filtering the mail but that you have a Mail rule that is moving messages to Spam without consulting SpamSieve. You can avoid this problem by deleting the SpamSieve rule in Mail’s settings. Or, if you use the automatic uninstaller, as described here, SpamSieve will clean it up for you.

I am desperately trying to figure out how to uninstall this app b/c it's a huge pain in my butt to use.

I cannot even figure out if I'm in trial mode (I downloaded the app 19 days ago) or if I paid.

When you launch the app it will tell you if it’s still in trial mode. You can also see this by choosing Purchase from the SpamSieve menu.

The apple filter seems to do a better job.

Usually when people say this it turns out that there was a setup problem or that SpamSieve was turned off. If you use the "Save Diagnostic Report" command in the Help menu and send me the report file, as described here:

https://c-command.com/spamsieve/help/sending-in-an-error-rep

we can help make sure that everything is in order.
