At one point, a message came up saying accessory not supported. But I tried the headphones that came with the phone and they don't work either. (I prefer over the ear headphone since the buds fall out too easily).
Any suggestions?

That would indicate that there is something wrong with the charging port. The first thing you should try is to clean it out. Under a bright light, with a magnifier, if you have one, use a non-conductive tool such as a toothpick to carefully remove any pocket lint or other debris that has gotten wedged in the back of the port. It can be quite astonishing how much gets stuck.
If that doesn't help, it's likely that there is something wrong with the port itself. Contact Apple for evaluation:

All my headphones stopped working (iphone 7) I can see one pair not working but certainly not 3 pairs
