I had downloaded many CD's on my previous Mac and unable to figure out how to add them to my present Mac book pro.I have an external hard drive which the adapter does not fit.Is there any way to get my music back?

is that the end on your external drive? if yes, you can use the adapter I linked to in my original reply.
this is an assumption, but does the external drive have a USB connection? and does the new Mac only have USB-C ports? if that is your situation, you can use an USB-C to USB Adapter to connect the old drive to your new Mac.
I'm not exactly sure, tried to send you a picture .Did I read somewhere that I needed to purchase Apple Music for my downloads?

yes that is what I have, the USB connection on my hard drive does not look like that

that is the point to this community, to help others that need it.
I'm looking again, and it looks like the cable connected to the external drive is removable.
if it is, can you unplug the cable from the drive and look at the port on the external drive itself. if I am correct, it should be the same as the port on your Mac. (which is USB-C) if the Mac and the external drive actually are the same, you can get an USB-C to USB-C cable with no need for an adapter.
