Sounds like the phone might be stuck in zoom mode.
Try double-tap the screen using 3 fingers. You may have to experiment a bit with the speed of the double tap.

Follow Bob's advice above ti retunr to un-zoomed view, then turn off Zoom in Settings ➜ Accessibility ➜ Zoom, so it does not get activated again.

Probably you had the Zoom option turned iff in Accessibility, or you got lucky and never grabbed the phone in such a way that caused it to activate it.
You can turn the option off, so it does not happen again.
Thanks for the help It worked. What I'm wondering why I never had this problem in the past years since I take it in and out of the same purse the same way. Or did they put the triple tap to zoom in one of the latest operating systems. Frankly, it's a real pain but at least now I know how to fix it. Now it's in Security lockout and says to enter my code again but I can't get the passcode enter screen to come up.
I don't want to erase the data since I just got it a couple of weeks ago and haven't backed it up yet. I'm hoping when the battery goes dead I'll be able to get to the passcode screen

Read the previous replies in the very thread you replied to.
My phone will show huge letters/numbers only 2 5 8 on the enter passcode. Can't do anything on the phone. Only way to get it back to reg. usage is to let the battery die. Fighting this for 6 months and does same on my new SE. Operating Sys error?
