Why is there a Locations folder in Mac Finder?

Hi guys,

Why is there a Locations folder in Mac Finder? What is the meaning of Locations in this particular case? What is a Location and what do we use it for?

Surprisingly, there is no thoughtful explanation to be found on this topic that I could find.

Please provide a simple and clear response. Thanks a lot.

Locations is not a folder, but rather is a category comprised of your current Mac, mounted drives, network shares available for mounting, servers detected on the local network (like my Synology DiskStation NAS), or a Network category which may again show a network NAS, or other network devices.

If I want to mount a share from my Synology NAS, I simply click on its name in my Locations entry on the Finder side bar and the share mounts.
