iphone emails: exchange: This message has not been downloaded from the server.

I am an I.T. admin who also runs the network and email server. This error on the iphone about the messages not being downloaded is bogus.

In the older IOS versions I would get the same error message, however, when you touch and hold the email message, it would preview the entire email because the iphone had in fact actually downloaded the message.

Now in the latest IOS, apple has disabled the preview to hide the fact that the message was actually downloaded.

I did a network packet capture on the mail server using my phone’s IP address while I downloaded email on my phone.

I can confirm 100% that when the iphone did not display a email message, it had already downloaded that message according to the email server logs and also the fact that whenever I would refresh the messages back and forth, switching between messages until the message actually displayed, the iphone never once talked to the mail server before the message was actually displayed.

I was able to reproduce this test over and over again to prove to other iphone users that their iphone never communicated with the mail server again before magically working out how to display the message that has an error message of “This message has not been downloaded from the server.”

This problem is an IOS issue that needs to be solved.

If this problem is not addressed in the next IOS update, the end users are going to see this for what it is.

Don’t simply blame the end user’s non apple / not icloud / email solution / email server / third party email.

It is an strange situation that apple’s own icloud accounts don’t get the same error message.

It is a strange situation that the previous IOS version would allow you to touch and hold the message that could not be downloaded and it would fully display the contents of the message until we let go. It is very strange that the preview feature has now been disabled in the new IOS versions.

Fix the problem and stop trying to make people feel like they should have to use an apple icloud account because their own email solution is inferior to apple’s….

I am interested in sharing my findings with others and with apple.

I have the same issue on my iPad, which uses Apples own email app. I have two fixes.

  1. On the iPad, select Reply and the message magically appears. It remains visible even after cancelling the reply.
  2. On my iPhone, I use the Outlook email app. In this, I never get ‘not downloaded’.

I think this is appalling behaviour from Apple because in an increasingly digital world we receive many things (event passes, QR codes for parking, flight details) be email that we simply present on the device at the point we need to; check-in, or a concert gate etc. And almost all of these will be booked well in advance.

My own example is that I have booked a holiday to celebrate my wife’s birthday and received QR codes for the car park and the hotel reservation, four events, a restaurant booking and a link to prepay for a gluten free cake three days before we arrive (my wife is coeliac). I have just been to check everything, which I booked in January 2024, and on my iPad “message not downloaded”. I checked my phone…there they are! On the iPad, I clicked Reply and the whole message appeared, codes, QRs and the necessary link. I cancelled the Reply and the email contents remained on screen so I can use the link to pay for the cake. I then went through all the other emails and had to Reply to see them all too.

It must be date-related, but that is very poor from Apple.

This fix works. I got a new phone 1phone 15 thinking it wold help but it didn’t.

THIS WORKED GOING ON 3 Days now

Pick an email of which you know you have many undeleted.

2 press search to locate them all

3. place your finger in the upper left-hand corner of your screen with a very light touch. Move your finger down to the lower left-hand corner. Every single email you ever have had in that email address will be highlighted.

3 press delete.

After I deleted well over 1000 emails now works fine!!

I discovered this because I have 2 yahoo accounts one I’ve had for over 20 years and that’s the one that would not download from the server. The other one is relatively new. I’ve only had it for five or six years and there’s no problem with it at all.

Have the same problem for years! Usually quitting and restarting the mail app does it, which gives a first *strong* hint that something on the side of Apple and the way that the mail app works is a bit out of balance! I’ve usually got the problem with gmail accounts. It does work very well when I access through the gmail website *next hint*. I also have admittedly a lot of emails in my accounts (who doesn’t?), so perhaps there’s something in the way the app tries to load them that leads to it being ultimately unsuccessful? I also did find that after i bought a new MacBook with crazy amounts of working memory, a lot of the mail issues (that also happened on macOS) disappeared. This is another *strong* hint that mail might not run very efficiently.

In any case, it would be good if someone at Apple were to dedicate some time to fixing these small (?) issues that cause a lot of frustration and productivity loss for users but are perhaps less shiny than cars or VR headsets (sorry).

I think with all the user reports coming in, it should be clear that people checked their WiFi connections etc. before posting. So no need to point that out anymore (even if well intended). Thanks!

The message you're seeing, "iPhone emails: exchange: This message has not been downloaded from the server," typically appears in the Mail app on an iPhone when you are using Microsoft Exchange as your email service provider. This message indicates that the email message in question has not been fully downloaded or synced from the server to your device.

There could be several reasons for this message:

  1. If your iPhone is having trouble connecting to the internet or your Exchange server, it might not be able to download the email content.
  2. Sometimes, there can be synchronization issues between your device and the server, preventing the email content from being downloaded.
  3. If the email contains large attachments, it might take longer to download or might not download at all if there are limitations set on attachment size.
  4. It's possible that the server settings are misconfigured, leading to problems with downloading emails.
  5. Your Exchange server might have restrictions in place that prevent certain types of emails from being downloaded to mobile devices.

To troubleshoot the issue, you can try the following steps:

  1. Make sure your iPhone is connected to a stable internet connection, either through Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  2. In the Mail app, try to refresh your inbox by pulling down the screen to force the app to sync and download new emails.
  3. Close the Mail app and then reopen it. Sometimes, this can help resolve syncing issues.
  4. If the problem persists, try restarting your iPhone. This can often solve various software glitches.
  5. Double-check that your Exchange server settings on your iPhone are correct. You may need to re-enter your email account details.
  6. If your device is low on storage, it might not be able to download new emails. Clear some space by deleting unnecessary apps or files.
  7. If none of the above steps work, you can try removing your Exchange email account from your iPhone and then adding it back again.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you might want to contact your IT department or email service provider for further assistance, as the problem could be related to server-side configurations or issues.

Having the same issue but with my gmail. Looked at this forum for answers. Did everything they mentioned nothing worked. Did it one more time and still nothing. Kept seeing this loading wheel next to my service provider. Tried to touch it to see the problem- nothing. Then the lower screen message that’s says “checking for mail…” touched that and apparently because I had changed my password recently. It wanted me to log back in with the new password for that account in settings. Then all of a sudden my email is flooded with 100+ missed emails and all the ones that weren’t loading. Now are finally loaded. Needless to say it might not work for all users but it worked for me. Irritated but glad I fixed my own issue and a little disappointed that even the issue or customer support hasn’t resolved this.

this worked!!

Too many emails you must delete

went to yahoo mail

searched for Macys

press search

then edit

then either delete one at a time or for fast action lightly touch top left of screen ren ringer down to bottom and hold it there and all of the Macy ads I had do previously deleted were highlighter

press delete

Using this technique with other others I deleted well over 1000 emails and not yahoo works fine on my iphone

It gets better. Not only is it doing this to me for an email that I need to get a link from and that the phone did have yesterday, but when I hit reply on the message it says hasn’t been down loaded, it shows the full body of the message in the reply, so it absolutely has already download it and does have it. This bogus, fake error message is nothing but complete broken nonsense from Apple, making it harder for us to use the phone to do crucial things that we need to do in our businesses, for no reason that is possible to see.
