Left AirPod registers in case but not when you take it out

Yesterday I noticed that my left AirPod was connecting when I put it in my ear and after a little trial and error I have found that the left AirPod will not register outside of the case but when placed inside of the case it shows that’s it is charged. It was working completely fine yesterday morning and nothing happened to it during the day that I think could have caused anything but after resetting them twice it is still doing the same thing.

wondering if anyone has any suggestions before I try and get it repaired
