M2 MacBook Pro screen crack for no apparent reason

Similar to M1 MacBook Air screen cracking reports during normal use or overnight, without any apparent reason, my MacBook M2 pro screen suffered same. My mac is not even completely one year old, it was working perfectly before I went to sleep last night and when I woke up there was a crack on left side of the mac, after a few hours when I saw it again the crack became bigger and the whole display was black, before it was atleast working half side normally but then it wasn’t at all. I closed it properly, I did not damage it I’m any ways, it didn’t move the whole night. The mac from outside shows no damages on the screen but when switched on the screen display shows white lines and black screen. This had a already happened with over 3600 users and discussions have taken place in “MacBook air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason”, same has happened with me but now I’m M2 and MacBook Pro. The images attached below shows the spread of the crack. I can say with 100% confidence that it has not been physically damaged.

Just returned from Genius appointment. Nope, essentially got called a liar. “Accidental Damage” not covered by warranty that I still have 65 days left on. I did not drop, I did not close with force, I did not have a crumb near it. I just opened it up in December to do homework and it had the tiniest of crack in the right corner. I touched lightly and it haired down and the system became inoperable.

The solution-$500 plus tax to repair under warranty device, or $150 trade in on a device I’m still paying off that I bought with apple credit last March.

What a joke. I used my student discount and bought a new one and kept the broken one. I will keep pushing to get it repaired for a reasonable and sell it or give it to my daughter.

I showed this feed to apple rep and got a deer in the headlights “I’ve never heard of this” Come on now…do better Apple. This is the most dissatisfying and disappointing thing I’ve seen from you.

You are assuming I didn't, but I am afraid to tell you that I went to an apple center with technical specialists, the one the official technical support told me to go by phone (in fact I had to travel more than 70 km to get to the nearest one). I did not go there to argue. I went there to get my laptop evaluated and repaired and what I am telling you is what I was told by their official technical crew. You assume too many things. I hope you don't have to go through what other people here are complaining about, because it is no joke.

It is not my first Mac at all. I have been using Mac for more than 22 years. I had issues with my previous MacBook Pro, I am not expecting perfection even if we pay tons... but I have never seen anything like this, but maybe what had disappointed me the most is that I never expected such a poor response from Apple with something like it.

I'm adding this because it seems to be happening to many others. Bought a Mac Air M2 on 11/19/23 and the screen cracked 12/12. I've had macs for years and treat them gently. Never had a problem before, and now had to pay $600 to get this fixed. And now I'm worried the screen will crack again! I'm not happy with Apple and honestly wish I hadn't bought this computer.

That's because you have been scammed. Apple has known about this problem since the M1 when it first started, and have decided to go the Pinto route: accept the collateral damage rather than fix the problem. And although no one is getting burnt alive by being rear-ended (google Pinto, Ralph Nader) they are making many thousands of customers furious. Plus, they remove posts mentioning the class action suit that is moving forward despite their constant attempts to get it dismissed. I can now say that the ensh|ttification of Apple is in full bloom.

Yes, same problem for us. And the bummer is we paid to get the screen repaired and the new screen has an internal crack after only 3 weeks. Mac book Air was always kept in the travel case. How is it possible that my older Mac Book Pros have lasted years without a problem and this one (2020 model, Mac Book Air) has the screen crack twice, without impact? This has to be a flaw in the screen or design. It should not be this fragile. Again, not covered by warranty.

To those that are saying they had a repair for free can you evidence this - it would help the rest of us - I have spent hours arguing with apple care and in stores with no movement.

it is accidental damage sir but we aren’t calling you a liar just that their is no way this can happen without it being your fault

my view is that the screens are too fragile - too large and thin to consistently cope with being opened and closed so that a number of them develop cracks

the problem is only those of us with in warranty screens get really annoyed and post here. I’m sure theirs a huge number of people with slightly older devices suffering the same issue

in my experience apple just batted me away saying it was my fault but also in the same sentence saying they believed me

mine started as a single vertical line and is much worse now

That's not how it works. They refuse to cover it under normal warranty because they claim any internal crack of the screen is basically your fault. They assume it was created by something external. ...

When you have something going wrong with your device, you don't go there to argue, you just hand it over or send it to the service under warranty. That's how it works. Neither you or the guy at the shop is a technical service specialist. When you send it in, an authorised, trained, technical service person(s) will give a professional evaluation. Read this How to send your Mac to Apple for service - Apple Support carefully and take your decision. Those technical service people at Apple are highly trained professionals.

I have a theory or two

mine is a MacBook Pro bought May 2023

  1. that I’ve had picked it up and because of the weight my grip is enough to cause this ‘ pressure that damages the screen’ in other words you can’t pick it up
  2. Very occasionally when the screen isn’t oriented right I’ve noticed I hold the screen at the bottom left corner with my left hand to adjust the screen angulation - in other words the screen is too fragile for normal use
  3. i did clean my screen just before my issue with a specialist screen cleaner and cloth - in other words the screen is too fragile for normal use

I got mine repaired at my own cost and now am terrified to put the hard case I bought on it in case that was the issue , I won’t clean the screen in case it cracks which is **** because some fingerprints are on the screen and I basically won’t move the computer from my desk in case it will break but then it’s not actually a laptop anymore ……..

This just happened to me today! (Feb 23, 2024). I was working on my laptop at home on a desk, went to do a few errands and came back and saw my screen cracked on the bottom right. The right side and bottom of the screen is is black with colored lines on it. What the heck! I bought this MacBook Air M1 in Nov 2023. This is my 4th Apple laptop and I've never had this happen before. I came straight to this forum to see if this has happened to other people. This is crazy!
