M2 MacBook Pro screen crack for no apparent reason

Similar to M1 MacBook Air screen cracking reports during normal use or overnight, without any apparent reason, my MacBook M2 pro screen suffered same. My mac is not even completely one year old, it was working perfectly before I went to sleep last night and when I woke up there was a crack on left side of the mac, after a few hours when I saw it again the crack became bigger and the whole display was black, before it was atleast working half side normally but then it wasn’t at all. I closed it properly, I did not damage it I’m any ways, it didn’t move the whole night. The mac from outside shows no damages on the screen but when switched on the screen display shows white lines and black screen. This had a already happened with over 3600 users and discussions have taken place in “MacBook air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason”, same has happened with me but now I’m M2 and MacBook Pro. The images attached below shows the spread of the crack. I can say with 100% confidence that it has not been physically damaged.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.4

When you have something going wrong with your device, you don't go there to argue, you just hand it over or send it to the service under warranty. That's how it works. Neither you or the guy at the shop is a technical service specialist. When you send it in, an authorised, trained, technical service person(s) will give a professional evaluation. Read this How to send your Mac to Apple for service - Apple Support carefully and take your decision. Those technical service people at Apple are highly trained professionals.

This just happened to me today! (Feb 23, 2024). I was working on my laptop at home on a desk, went to do a few errands and came back and saw my screen cracked on the bottom right. The right side and bottom of the screen is is black with colored lines on it. What the heck! I bought this MacBook Air M1 in Nov 2023. This is my 4th Apple laptop and I've never had this happen before. I came straight to this forum to see if this has happened to other people. This is crazy!

I was using my computer today when I noticed that I had a vertical line on the screen. As I kept using the computer I noticed some horizontal lines. I took it to apple and was told that there is no physical damage on my screen but that there is a problem with the display. I was told that I would need to replace the screen for $750. I told them that many customers have reported the same issue but they did not care. I did not drop my device or did anything for the display to be damaged. Such poor customer service

I’m devastated. This happened to me a few days ago, after 2 years of owning my Macbook Air 13” M2. I closed it as I usually do every night, and woke up to a huge internal crack at the corner of the screen that damaged the entire OLED. No physical damage done to it whatsoever—$500+ repair. If it really is a result of overheating from the Sonoma update’s moving screensaver, which I was using at the time, I can’t in good conscience return to Apple products. I’m gutted.

I’ve joined just to comment here that you’re not crazy and the same happened to me today - this is not caused by a physical damage! I only (normally) opened my laptop (Pro M2) and the upper left corner just cracked. My screen immediately went black and it doesn’t work anymore although I can turn the laptop on. The cracks are visible only when the laptop is on, there’s not a single scratch on it, it is always well protected (and especially considering its price and the fear how expensive it might be to repair anything). There were no bread crumbles on it, it didn’t fell, it was simply next to my work laptop on a work desk / flat surface. I contacted their CS and they said I can send it in for a repair for 668 EUR after tax. So disappointed!

Is the repair indeed this expensive and does it require a screen replacement? Is there anything else that could be done to fix this? (Obviously no warranty anymore and no Apple care.)

Thanks!

Totally agree with what you have theorised. My screen hasn't cracked, but it happened to a friend not long after I bought my M2 MacBook Pro. I took out AppleCare as a result ($449 for three years in my country - that's $299 in USD). The screen always sounds like it's flexing with just normal movement. Little 'crackling' sounds can be heard when opening, adjusting and closing the screen. It's hard to tell if the sound is emanating from the flexing glass or the hinges. Long story short, this device is not fit for purpose. I cannot risk commuting with it - it's far too fragile. I always open and close it slowly from the centre indent, never the right corner (which is common for right-handed users). I do pick it up and move it when closed (sometimes with one hand) and it has occurred to me that my grip could be placing too much pressure on the flimsy case. Basically, this device cannot function as a portable device, so I have to take my old MS Surface Pro to work (which is far from ideal). I am even considering getting my MacBook Pro relic repaired. That thing is built like a brick and the screen is as tough as nails. I think you should still be able to clean your screen with very light strokes, but you’re correct in saying that these new devices need to be treated with kid gloves. It’s a pity because the internals of the machine are indeed excellent. So frustrating, Apple!

So many other threads on this in this community (see below). People who spend 2-3k on a computer aren't likely to be throwing rocks at them. Clear there's a fault with liquid retina displays. I am assuming this will continue with the M3 Macbook Pros
