M2 MacBook Pro screen crack for no apparent reason

Similar to M1 MacBook Air screen cracking reports during normal use or overnight, without any apparent reason, my MacBook M2 pro screen suffered same. My mac is not even completely one year old, it was working perfectly before I went to sleep last night and when I woke up there was a crack on left side of the mac, after a few hours when I saw it again the crack became bigger and the whole display was black, before it was atleast working half side normally but then it wasn’t at all. I closed it properly, I did not damage it I’m any ways, it didn’t move the whole night. The mac from outside shows no damages on the screen but when switched on the screen display shows white lines and black screen. This had a already happened with over 3600 users and discussions have taken place in “MacBook air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason”, same has happened with me but now I’m M2 and MacBook Pro. The images attached below shows the spread of the crack. I can say with 100% confidence that it has not been physically damaged.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.4

It’s just happened to me as well. I bought Macbook Pro M2 October 2023 and it’s been 4 months only. I still used the device this afternoon and it was completely fine. I just placed it on my table, and in the evening surprisingly I saw a cracked on the left side of the screen and the screen did not appear. It’s completely black out! I didn’t feel I dropped it or put pressure on, or anything. I don’t want to pay $750 and it will happen again.

This week my 9-month-old MacBook Pro M2 screen cracked without me touching it. I'd closed it and when I came back a few hours later I opened it to see this. I haven't done any damage of any kind. It just happened. The Apple Store in Brighton UK gave me a load of waffle about there 'being two crack points rather than one', meaning it's not covered. It's such a customer-crushing nonsense loophole and I felt like I was going crazy, the way they were talking around it. The two Apple people checking it also touched it loads as they inspected it and made it ten times worse before giving their final verdict. I bought this laptop last year and I look after it really well; I'm now paying £699 plus VAT to get it fixed. I'm absolutely gutted. What daylight robbery. I've been an Apple gal since they first ever came out; this experience has been horrendous and I'm seriously considering moving to PC. Any suggestions?!

It's a common narrative that users are often held responsible for screen cracks. Based on multiple posts here, it's evident that the screens are prone to damage, not like all here inadvertently leaves objects between the screen and the keyboard. An Apple technician informed me that the screens on these devices are vulnerable to damage. if you decide to purchase these devices, it's advisable to enroll in the extended warranty program. This program allows you to obtain a new screen for $99. While there used to be a limit of two replacements, Apple has removed this restriction, indicating their awareness of the issue.

If you have already visited an Apple store, securing the first replacement might be challenging due to recorded incidents. However, if you haven't, consider signing up for the warranty program before you go.

FYI:

I opted for Apple products primarily for their durability, despite my aversion to the operating system. Nevertheless, I have always admired the hardware aspect of their products. I'll need to carefully consider whether they are still worth the investment when my next purchase comes around.

Just wanted to add my voice to the massive chorus reporting this issue. 2023 M2 Pro Macbook Pro, purchased just over four months ago for over $2k. Never dropped or damaged. I closed the screen, which had been working just fine, took it to another room, opened it, and it was cracked and completely black. No sign of anything on the keyboard, didn't feel a thing when I closed it, didn't see anything when I opened it.

I took it to the Genius Bar and they said it was not covered by warranty and would be $750 to fix because it was "damaged". I explained the story to no avail. The (very nice) Apple Store employee said that this happens a lot, and that it could be caused by "a crumb".

So, feature request: Apple, in the future, please make your two thousand dollar laptops crumb proof!

I had a problem with my M3 MacBook Pro 14-inch laptop that I bought on December 9th, 2023. When I turned on my computer yesterday morning, I noticed a crack on the screen that gradually became larger. I used the computer lightly and mostly kept it in the office, so I was surprised to see this issue. Unfortunately, the repair will cost me 1200 CAD, even though I've only used it for less than four months. The technician at the Genius Bar was helpful, but they only gave me two options: either get it repaired or use it as a desktop. I find it disappointing that my previous MacBook, bought in 2012, was more durable than this one. It is definitely design a flaw; how can a screen crack like this so easily without even being dropped or being closed with force?

I am having the same problem with only 9-10 mths old M2...the LCD is cracked easily and the repair/replacement will cost about SGD $700++ OMG....Apple....common...I have been using Apple almost for all products (iphone, macbook air early 2014, ipad) for a long time, and buy Apple again (macbook air M2) because I thought the products will be good, long lasting but sooo disappointed..this macbook air so fragile...I will never use Macbook again, and I started to think that Apple products is no longer "premium". I should read this forum before bought, let's create awareness of this Apple products!!!

Sorry to say, same happened to me as described in this thread. I have a M1 MacbookAir 13" laptop and oddly enough, updated the OSX to Sonoma no more than a week prior. One minute my wife and I were watching a movie on it and the next we were watching the screen meet its demise. I'm not sure what other details might be of relevance but it is, in my humble opinion, without a doubt a manufacturing defect.

My screen did the same 3 months ago. Was working fine, shut it down, closed it and it was sitting unbothered on my desk. Came back a few hours later and bottom right hand corner of screen has a small crack. Mine is also lightly used. This is the second macbook this has happened on. First was on a Macbook Air and we assumed maybe one of the kids did it and fibbed about it, until this just happened again and no kids to break this one.

That's no fun but we can't really do much over the user forums here. If your MacBook is still under warranty (should be if you've had it for less than a year), and this is not accidental damage, your best bet is to schedule a Genius Bar appointment or arrange a repair with Apple Support. Get started at https://getsupport.apple.com. Sorry there isn't a more straightforward answer right now.
