M2 MacBook Pro screen crack for no apparent reason

Similar to M1 MacBook Air screen cracking reports during normal use or overnight, without any apparent reason, my MacBook M2 pro screen suffered same. My mac is not even completely one year old, it was working perfectly before I went to sleep last night and when I woke up there was a crack on left side of the mac, after a few hours when I saw it again the crack became bigger and the whole display was black, before it was atleast working half side normally but then it wasn’t at all. I closed it properly, I did not damage it I’m any ways, it didn’t move the whole night. The mac from outside shows no damages on the screen but when switched on the screen display shows white lines and black screen. This had a already happened with over 3600 users and discussions have taken place in “MacBook air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason”, same has happened with me but now I’m M2 and MacBook Pro. The images attached below shows the spread of the crack. I can say with 100% confidence that it has not been physically damaged.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.4

I am in the IT space and have seen this issue over the past few weeks. I have noticed it’s mostly with the larger pro models (15 and 16 inch displays) all running the Sonoma update. One instance was hours after updating. We have had a few changes on these employees locations so at first we were checking for dirty power, Replaced the charging bricks, Surge protectors, USB-C cables at the new locations. We have one user that had this happen twice, I can update if there is another issue after changing out all possible power related hardware. I am now looking into the possibility of a feature on Sonoma that is on by default (System Settings -> Screen Saver -> Any moving screensaver), It seems that when these are playing on the screensaver the laptop heats up causing the bottom, specifically the left side, of the screen to heat up. After letting the screensaver play for less that 15 minutes I noticed a drastic difference in temperature from the bottom of the screen to the top. I am curious that this is the issue that is causing these screens to crack, scrolling on this forum not many people provide much detail but from what it looks like on screenshots is most if not all are running the Sonoma update and it appears they are also using the video screensavers as a wallpaper/screensaver. I feel terrible about people that are having to pay out of pocket for the repairs of brand new devices when the issue could be software related, That is enabled by default.

I left my MacBook Pro in its case and came home this evening took it out and tried to turn it on and noticed a crack on the bottom right and it won’t even turn on. It seems like the crack is on the inside and not outside.

I thought I was going crazy because I have not dropped it or had anything fallen on it and not even knocked it into anything. This is so strange because last night it was working perfectly well.

I’m shocked that this is an issue that is common with the M1 MacBook Pro! So this is actually Apple’s fault yet they are still demanding that the customer pay for something that is not our fault!

I will have to take mine in and see what they say!

Add me to the list purchased Nov 2023, my MacBook Pro, which is very gently used and does not leave my house. Worked the night before, woke up next morning and the screen had lines going across it. I took it to the Apple Store. They told me it was my fault and that the screen had an internal break on the left bottom corner. I argued and argued with them over how This was not my fault. This is a design flaw. They treated me like I was lying would not even entertain that it could possibly be their problem. I was charged $911 almost 50% of the value of what I paid for my MacBook Pro. I am very upset. If there are any class action suits, I would love to join one.

I have a theory or two

mine is a MacBook Pro bought May 2023

  1. that I’ve had picked it up and because of the weight my grip is enough to cause this ‘ pressure that damages the screen’ in other words you can’t pick it up
  2. Very occasionally when the screen isn’t oriented right I’ve noticed I hold the screen at the bottom left corner with my left hand to adjust the screen angulation - in other words the screen is too fragile for normal use
  3. i did clean my screen just before my issue with a specialist screen cleaner and cloth - in other words the screen is too fragile for normal use

I got mine repaired at my own cost and now am terrified to put the hard case I bought on it in case that was the issue , I won’t clean the screen in case it cracks which is **** because some fingerprints are on the screen and I basically won’t move the computer from my desk in case it will break but then it’s not actually a laptop anymore ……..

This won't stay up long because either applebots or heartless applehumans have me tagged as a troublemaker and remove my posts about this issue. But if those of us who have lost thousands of dollars and spent countless frustrating hours trying to get restitution started contacting Youtubers, journalists, and high-profile mac specialists and ask them if they know about the issue, maybe we can get some traction. Just a thought. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hi

perhaps read the post I’ve already been to Apple and they are blaming it on physical damage - you don’t have to believe me of course but it has not been dropped or had anything between keyboard and screen etc.

the Apple genius seemed to suggest you can’t even carry these in a backpack this suggests to me a fragility problem not a user problem.

the other posts here back that up and frankly knowing their are others out there like me getting no help from Apple makes me feel a bit better. I hope by posting here others respond and we can demonstrate a trend

I think people are just trying to see if anyone has an explanation as to how this damage could occur, which is a type of problem-solving venture. Since I bought one of these laptops just before Christmas, I now know that I could be taking a risk to treat it like a portable computer that can sustain a few bumps and falls (my last MacBook Pro was built like a tank!). It seems as though the new screens are too thin to sustain pressure (hinges?) or temperature changes (ambient or vents near screen?), let alone an actual accident.

Just spent 2k on a macbook m2 a month ago here in aus. Literally got home, there is a weird cracked line and the screen is blank. The laptop hasn't left my bed. I had a 2017 macbook pro with touch bar that i bought years ago, and that screen failed, admittedly, the laptop had fallen off the side of the bed. I was confused by the damage because my macbook 2012 ( which I'm writing on now, basically survived a thousand and one drops that were way worse then falling off a bed onto carpet) Now I put my faith back in apple hoping the m2 was peak engineering. Turns out it isn't. What I am assuming happened is where I picked it up with my hands, by the screen has done something and now the screen is black with little LED strip lights shining. OK so this is damage? You cannot touch your laptop? Weirdest thing about it is, I have a proven history with LAPTOPS (the one I am typing on now) and seeing as I've had my macbook pro for 12 years would indicate that I am a responsible owner and user of a laptop and I expect a certain amount of durability. This laptop has gone to the USA, all throught out europe, survived a few drink spills, survived drops off tables, survived just about everything I reckon and I've never had a protective case. Now if I go to the genius bar and they tell me this is my fault for touching the screen, then for me, that will be like a car manufacturer telling me its my fault for driving a new car if it breaks down after a month of purchasing. These are tactile objects that are subject to force, especially tactile force (within reason) and if those p r i c k s tell me that it is my fault for having touched my screen well I am going to ask them to cut off my hands give me another laptop. What a joke apple has become. I've given them 4k in the past 8 years for two faulty laptops, and I am venting my anger from my 2012 macbook which is still a beast (thank you steve jobs and you would be rolling in your grave seeing what they have done to your company)

That's exactly what I did. They blamed the crack on me and slapped a price tag of $699 plus tax for the replacement, making it almost $800. You could get a fancy laptop for that amount in BB, throw in a snazzy Linux, and watch it zoom past the latest OS on M2s like it's in a turbocharged comedy race.

Apple is highly trained professionals.

Sure, they are. They treated me like I'd insulted their sacred Apple pie when I dared to question the screen quality. I argued that the screen was weaker than a soggy noodle compared to my previous model. The selfie-awere clerk in Burlingame genius bar looked at me as if I'd just insulted the intelligence of Siri. Maybe he thought, 'Here's another technologically-challenged relic,' or at least, that's what I imagined. Little did he know, I've been an Apple user since the days of Apple mono-colored laptops. I was coding Apple software on CodeWarrior back in the '90s when he was probably still figuring out how to tie his shoelaces. And oh, the support during the 'Power Mac' days during Jobs was ousted—it was a comedy of errors, much like the current situation.

After this, I'm pretty sure the Good Ol' Apple days are on permanent vacation with Jobs. RIP Steve, the Apple charm just got replaced by the sound of crickets in tech support.
