M2 MacBook Pro screen crack for no apparent reason

Similar to M1 MacBook Air screen cracking reports during normal use or overnight, without any apparent reason, my MacBook M2 pro screen suffered same. My mac is not even completely one year old, it was working perfectly before I went to sleep last night and when I woke up there was a crack on left side of the mac, after a few hours when I saw it again the crack became bigger and the whole display was black, before it was atleast working half side normally but then it wasn’t at all. I closed it properly, I did not damage it I’m any ways, it didn’t move the whole night. The mac from outside shows no damages on the screen but when switched on the screen display shows white lines and black screen. This had a already happened with over 3600 users and discussions have taken place in “MacBook air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason”, same has happened with me but now I’m M2 and MacBook Pro. The images attached below shows the spread of the crack. I can say with 100% confidence that it has not been physically damaged.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.4

I am in the IT space and have seen this issue over the past few weeks. I have noticed it’s mostly with the larger pro models (15 and 16 inch displays) all running the Sonoma update. One instance was hours after updating. We have had a few changes on these employees locations so at first we were checking for dirty power, Replaced the charging bricks, Surge protectors, USB-C cables at the new locations. We have one user that had this happen twice, I can update if there is another issue after changing out all possible power related hardware. I am now looking into the possibility of a feature on Sonoma that is on by default (System Settings -> Screen Saver -> Any moving screensaver), It seems that when these are playing on the screensaver the laptop heats up causing the bottom, specifically the left side, of the screen to heat up. After letting the screensaver play for less that 15 minutes I noticed a drastic difference in temperature from the bottom of the screen to the top. I am curious that this is the issue that is causing these screens to crack, scrolling on this forum not many people provide much detail but from what it looks like on screenshots is most if not all are running the Sonoma update and it appears they are also using the video screensavers as a wallpaper/screensaver. I feel terrible about people that are having to pay out of pocket for the repairs of brand new devices when the issue could be software related, That is enabled by default.

So this has happened to me today. My 3 month old M1 macbook pro 14 inch's screen randomly cracked after i came from dinner and i still cannot figure out why. I am coming up with possibilities that maybe there must be some food item left while closing the screen but after seeing this thread i don't think so. I have been using Macbook Air 2017 then macbook pro 13 inch and never faced this issue. I did not drop it and no such accident happened. There seems so be a design or a software flaw in the new macbooks.

Well I'm here because I bought an Apple MacBook Pro M3 14 inch laptop Nov 4th of 2023 and it quit charging about January 4, 2023. Luckily it was still under complete warranty of bring it back anytime before January 13 from Best Buy and they gave me a brand new one. Then six weeks later like a week or so ago I'm over getting my taxes done and I've been watching some videos of some football replays and it came my turn to get my taxes done at this tax clinic and the guy was taking quite a while so I was just going to open my laptop up and check something and my screen was completely black wouldn't come on. I called Apple care they said it should be under the hardware warranty but you might wanna take it to Best Buy since you don't have an Apple Store in your city and it's 200 miles away to see what they will do. They probably will mail it in for you.

So I took it to Best Buy. They said the condition was new and sent it in. Sure enough as everyone else's talked in the community, then I get a call saying I've got to pay $99, because there's an internal crack that's not visible externally, but something must've happened externally that causes internal crack. Well, I think it's nice that they've made it so you can have more than two type repairs (if I understand what is being said in this thread) of these if it happens again, but it is a little unsettling and worrisome that as far as I know, had never dropped this device or done anything to it to cause stress on the screen, other than clean the screen with a screen cleaner. wipe. I too will have to get more cautious abount my next device if this continues to be a problem or if this starts happening repeatedly!

However, and I really probably would prefer to be on windows. Sorry for those of you or die hard apple folks, but I can't find anything that gives me the battery life that these M chips give and they run cool all the time or at least mine have. I have a refurbished MacBook Air M1 and it gives me 18 hours frequently and the MacBook Pro M3 mentioned above I often get 15 out of it. All I'm really looking for is something that will give me seven or eight hours during the workday, but I can't find anything any kind of i7 windows that will come anywhere near that. Plus I have 18 GB of unified memory which they've convinced me is essentially the same as ram and I can't get anything for the price that I got this MacBook Pro M3 from Best Buy for on sale around Christmas. Anyway, I appreciate the forum, and may the consumers of Apple unite!

Just wanted to add my voice to the massive chorus reporting this issue. 2023 M2 Pro Macbook Pro, purchased just over four months ago for over $2k. Never dropped or damaged. I closed the screen, which had been working just fine, took it to another room, opened it, and it was cracked and completely black. No sign of anything on the keyboard, didn't feel a thing when I closed it, didn't see anything when I opened it.

I took it to the Genius Bar and they said it was not covered by warranty and would be $750 to fix because it was "damaged". I explained the story to no avail. The (very nice) Apple Store employee said that this happens a lot, and that it could be caused by "a crumb".

So, feature request: Apple, in the future, please make your two thousand dollar laptops crumb proof!

in the space of 4-6 months, i have seen my 2023 16inch MacBook Pro $4000 M1 chip - crack at the bottom right edge and in a matter of days the screen went from lines to black.

followed by my daughters MacBook Pro and Mac book air… all cracked while carrying out normal tasks - no damage or poor handling, just simply opening the lid is enough!

this is a major flaw and needs to be recalled

I am having the same problem. MacBook Pro 2022, M2. I bought it in Switzerland in the summer of 22, and yesterday (6 April 24) the flickering stripes, some in colour, others in b/w, started to appear on the bottom and on the right side of the screen. It was in the middle of a working session, not even after closing/opening the lid. I was just sitting there, typing, and it happened. No physical harm, for 100%. Also, in contrary to other examples mentioned here, there are no cracks in the screen. It's just these silly lines. It is absolutely obnoxious. I haven't even gone to the Apple store, as it's a weekend, but reading the other contributions I kinda know what to expect. Being lectured about not treating the device carefully, haha. This is obviously a flaw in the product, and it's a shame Apple doesn't acknowledge it. They have started replacement programs for flawed screens of older models, and I assume at some point they will have to launch one for this model too. Not sure I can wait until then. Similar to other commentators, I have been working with Apple notebooks for literally decades, since the mid-90s, and I had always very strong devices that worked flawless for up to 10 years. This is very different. I wonder what the actual cause of the problem is. Wouldn't it have to be software issues...? I have no idea.

To those that are saying they had a repair for free can you evidence this - it would help the rest of us - I have spent hours arguing with apple care and in stores with no movement.

it is accidental damage sir but we aren’t calling you a liar just that their is no way this can happen without it being your fault

my view is that the screens are too fragile - too large and thin to consistently cope with being opened and closed so that a number of them develop cracks

the problem is only those of us with in warranty screens get really annoyed and post here. I’m sure theirs a huge number of people with slightly older devices suffering the same issue

in my experience apple just batted me away saying it was my fault but also in the same sentence saying they believed me

mine started as a single vertical line and is much worse now

Would Apple ask $750 again to repair it again? The same happened to my M3 Macbook Pro (purchased 4 months ago). The crack was seen suddenly without any external force. They charged $760 yesterday. Apple store guys told me I should buy Apple Care when picking it up from the Apple store tech to cover any similar issue. I felt like Apple tries to avoid any expensive warranty but only interested in selling Apple Care to the customers. I am curious if they try to charge $760 again if the same type of crack would happen again if I would not have Apple care. Is "Apple care" to help customers or to save Apple's warranty cost to cover its bad quality control or design flaw?

I’ve joined just to comment here that you’re not crazy and the same happened to me today - this is not caused by a physical damage! I only (normally) opened my laptop (Pro M2) and the upper left corner just cracked. My screen immediately went black and it doesn’t work anymore although I can turn the laptop on. The cracks are visible only when the laptop is on, there’s not a single scratch on it, it is always well protected (and especially considering its price and the fear how expensive it might be to repair anything). There were no bread crumbles on it, it didn’t fell, it was simply next to my work laptop on a work desk / flat surface. I contacted their CS and they said I can send it in for a repair for 668 EUR after tax. So disappointed!

Is the repair indeed this expensive and does it require a screen replacement? Is there anything else that could be done to fix this? (Obviously no warranty anymore and no Apple care.)

Thanks!

Same. I requested to talk to a manager at Apple Store. Every staffs were managers apparently. One of staff told me his MacBook Pro screen cracked with no reason and he had to pay for repair. He asked me to do the same or leave. There were more than 20 staffs in the store more than customers. They just gathered and giggled each other but no one even tried to look at this forum which I was trying to show. They are only interested in selling new. I ended up paying $800 total for repair and paid $270 Apple care. I have previously worked for a company dealing with LCD panel. We did a lot of stress test on LCD panel such as bending pressing dropping etc. curious if Apple did any thorough testing on LCD and bezel by themselves or left it up to its suppliers?

Interesting theory. My 2023 M2 14-inch Macbook pro has this issue now. I bought this Macbook April 30-May 1st 2023.

I updated to sonoma (14.4.1) around march 25th 2024 and then May 2nd this happened to my screen.

I was working on my laptop, closed it like normal, left my house to go to get a coffee, came back, and opened my laptop and turned it on, and the screen was like this. Absolutely nothing physical happened to it yet Apple support says it's probably physical damage and I need to go in-store to have them look at it. There's a crack on the screen now but it's not on the surface. It appears to be underneath somewhere.

I don't use the 'moving screensaver function' so I have no idea why this happened. Maybe the update itself (sonoma 14.4.1 is causing it to crack somehow?)

I’ve had a 15” M2 MacBook Air for 4 months and just had the same issue. I was just typing on my table and a line popped up on the right side of the screen.

after a couple minutes it spread to half of the right side and it looks like there is a crack behind the glass of the panel (the glass has no physical damage).

This is my first MacBook and it’s been great so far, but I was really disappointed to find this forum with so many others experiencing the same issue.

My screen did the same 3 months ago. Was working fine, shut it down, closed it and it was sitting unbothered on my desk. Came back a few hours later and bottom right hand corner of screen has a small crack. Mine is also lightly used. This is the second macbook this has happened on. First was on a Macbook Air and we assumed maybe one of the kids did it and fibbed about it, until this just happened again and no kids to break this one.

This week my 9-month-old MacBook Pro M2 screen cracked without me touching it. I'd closed it and when I came back a few hours later I opened it to see this. I haven't done any damage of any kind. It just happened. The Apple Store in Brighton UK gave me a load of waffle about there 'being two crack points rather than one', meaning it's not covered. It's such a customer-crushing nonsense loophole and I felt like I was going crazy, the way they were talking around it. The two Apple people checking it also touched it loads as they inspected it and made it ten times worse before giving their final verdict. I bought this laptop last year and I look after it really well; I'm now paying £699 plus VAT to get it fixed. I'm absolutely gutted. What daylight robbery. I've been an Apple gal since they first ever came out; this experience has been horrendous and I'm seriously considering moving to PC. Any suggestions?!
