How can I block emails with no sender?

So it looks like a new email spam technique has developed. The email is send without a sending email address. When one of these emails is received by the Apple Mail app (Big Sur 11.6.5 on my imac), the "From" column displays (no sender). This thread on the Apple Community line How can I block emails from “no sender?” - Apple Community

provides absolutely no help. The Apple Reply appears to be from a AI bot that does not have human supervision. Given that the above link provides no help whatsoever, I thought it a good idea to ask again. Seems hard to believe that the Apple Mail app cannot screen these new spammers. Or perhaps later versions of macOS have solved the problem? My iMac is too old for an upgrade to a more recent macOS.

Set up a rule "From", "does not contain", "@", "delete". Worked for me.

I receive 50 of these per day and I am on a mac sierra and can only update to big sur. Seeing you cant fix it with big sur, I dont know how to get rid of this garbage. I will say this is only happening on emails that are on Roadrunner email. tampabay.rr.com in my case. Apple iCloud mail doe not receive it.

When you say only two people have this. No many millions have it on Roadrunner email addresses is what I was told and Charter or Spectrum doesnt care about it because email to them is their lowest priority. They have said they wished every email customer would get another provider and that is quoting them. Anyone have any success with blocking the no sender mail? Please respond .thanks

I had the same issue of course as everyone else. I figured out how to create a rule that blocks these and sends them to the deleted file so you never see them. I would suggest you call Apple and tell them you want to create a rule to send these emails to the trash or deleted folder so you never receive them again. They have things in common and you must write the rule to block the things they all have in common. I had to play with it a while to come up with the right definition for the rule but it works every time and the problem is gone. I can post the actual rule here, but I would rather recommend that you call Apple instead and let them tell you how to set it up. It is very logical, but it took me weeks to figure out how to do it. Don't lose hope if you have this issue. It can be resolved very easily once you think about it.

Good luck, Charlie

Have you tried setting up a rule inside Mail that moves a message to a folder that you designate if the sender DOES NOT contain a period character . or DOES NOT contain the @ symbol? The senders that are legitimate seem to all be in the form of xxx@yyy.zzz so a sender identified only as (no sender) would be flagged as not having a period (.) or not having an @ symbol (@) and would be sent to that spam folder. After determining that the rule works as you want, you could send those messages to the Trash instead of a folder.

Another reason I don't want to try an OS re-install is because I belieive this problem (cant block "no sender" emails) is a known problem with Apple mail. The thread I referenced is at least a year old. But on that year-old thread there are no useful solutions provided by Apple Support. So I suspect this is a known bug and Apple Support just doesnt want to acknowledge it publicly. I can't think of any other reason why such a simple question would go unanswered for so long. I suppose another reason why the original thread has not been answered is because it's a bot answering with no human supervision.

Very Interesting. It never occurred to me that there were only two people with this problem, me and the original poster in my thread above. I saw the "me too" button and assumed there must be more, perhaps mistakenly. I did some more checking around and found this: (No Sender) e-mail - Apple Community

which is macOS 13 Ventura. So more than two users with this problem but still apparently very few. The above Ventura thread ends with a Level 10 support person attributing the "no sender" problem to anti-virus software. anti-virus software is apparently nothing but a scam for macOS. i don't have any anti-virus softare on my machine. I will try the Product Feedback---Apple link.

While it should not be possible, it seems that some nefarious person has figured out a way to send an email without a sender. I've been getting 1 or 2 a day and looking at the raw headers, they seem to originate from Outlook/Exchange (see attached). I think that I've hidden my email address in the red boxes. What bothers me is that in order to "junk" the email, one has to click on it. I wouldn't be at all surprised that there is code embedded in the message body that sends back to sender, "Yay! We got another one! Keep them coming." One cannot set up a mail rule to move these to junk automatically because one needs to put something in the "From" box.

Who is your email provider? If Spectrum, a very good response can be found at: https://community.spectrum.net/discussion/172729/how-do-you-stop-spam-with-no-sender. Scroll down to "kpbr1600 September 2023". Here's his(?) reply:

"Go to the Spectrum email page at webmail.spectrum.net. Under

Settings, add an email filter to block any Sender that does not include

the @ symbol. It’s been working great for me!"

Spectrum also advises switching to a secure web based email provider.

Some thing I have tried, and seems to have worked is create a rule that states from does not contain . And just create a filter folder for anything to go to this way, you can easily double check and see if it works. It does not seem to delete any of my emails. It was suggested to create a rule that just had an.@ but that filters every email

Thank you for sharing the valuable "All Headers" tool. After receiving an intimidating "No Sender" email purporting to represent Malwarebytes, I checked Malwarebytes support. Here's their very helpful response: https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039025733-Advice-on-phishing-email-scams

I then used the "All Headers" tool to obtain the email source and submitted it to the suggested email analyzer and reported it to the FTC: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/. The origin of the "No Sender" email was pinpointed to a computer in Des Moines, IA. If there are other government agencies and/or other organizations who can help to fight this abuse, please share them.

No, there is no common text in the body of the emails that can be used to create a rule to remove the emails. The emails I am getting are spam advertisements. They are all different. The "no sender" is an email exploit that spammers are using to bypass junk filters in my Apple Mail app. The only question at this point is whether this problem is caused by my old hardware that can only pgrade to Big Sur 11.6.5. I suspect that since Big Sur 11.6.5 is no longer supported by Apple, and that since the "no sender" spam exploit is recent, then I may have no solution. This bug could be easily fixed by Apple and this bug probably already has been fixed by Apple in the lates macOS updates. Probs I am out of luck because Big Sur 11.6.5 is no longer getting updates by Apple.
