gateway.icloud.com

Why do some of my apps (photos, wallet…) regularly contact gateway.icloud.com even though icloud is turned off on my phone and I don´t use it at all? This information is contained in the Application Privacy Notice. What kind of domain is it and is it safe? Thank you
