IPHONE 12 went from 100% working to a black screen. Apple Support said Phone is Dead.

I phone 12 was working with zero complications. Was in my car 2 days ago and screen just went blank. Made a appt with Apple and said the phone is gone. Is my only option to start all over with a new phone. No phone replacements available from Apple? Is this a result of updating my software?? Feel completely tossed to the trash by Apple.

Please know I have tried all the Apple suggested ways to get this on again. (ie Vol up and down then hold power, charging, charging wireless, Plugging to computer - Apple technician said its shot) Crazy go from 100% - zero. Happened right after I took a picture of my dog. No Rhyme or Reason.

It’s hard to say exactly what could have caused your phone to stop working. Definitely not something that would have been caused by software, if it was a software issue, you’d still be able to either update or restore the phone using a Mac or PC.

Apple offers a one year limited warranty on your device for manufacturer defects, I’m assuming you’re multiple years out of warranty if you purchased the device on year of launch (2020) which is why Apple would not cover the cost of replacement.

Any chance you have extended warranty/service coverage through your cellular service provider?

I’d recommend you look into AppleCare+ for your next device, it used to be a 2-year only option, but now you can pay monthly until Apple no longer offers service on the device or you cancel.

I purchased from Verizon Jan 2021. Had insurance for 18 mos. After that they said it no longer paid to have insurance. Apple Care would have been expired as well. This phone didn't have a scratch. I kept it fully covered and clean. I heard there was a battery issue with last update. My advice from Apple tech was not to update your phone after having it for a while because the updates only cause the older models problems. I noticed a day or 2 before this happened, after charging my phone all night the phone remained less then 20%. I tried to charge again and it charged, but very slowly. This all just seems highly like an problem from an Apple update. (saw simular complaints online from people when they updated with ios 16.6.)

Well yeah, they’re gonna tell you it no longer pays to have insurance because they’re hoping you drop another $899+ on a new device with them, and then they’ll sell you insurance on that one.

Even if there were battery issues with the previous version of the update, it would not cause your phone to suddenly fail, this would be a hardware issue.

Idk what Apple employee would advise against updating your device, even if you don’t care about the new features, it’s the way to get security updates for your device and it assures that you’re able to use apps as they’re updated by the developer.

Either way, I’m sorry about your situation, I know it sucks to have an unplanned expense come up especially if things were going just fine. I’d really recommend you look into getting and keeping AppleCare or any kind of insurance for the time that you have your phone, you can baby products the best you can, but you can’t really anticipate unexpected failures.

Just want people to be aware that this can happen to anyone. I stand by what I think happened. Complaints say after the 16.6 update the batteries were no longer hold a charge or not charging. It was early in the day when this happened. I hadn't noticed the percent my battery was at. It was like it shut off because I went to zero battery. Then plugged it to several ports & never recharged. Apple has figured out every way to come up with ways to milk all of there customers for more and more money. This is a replay of 2.5 years ago when my daughters phone went crazy after a software update. Just so stupid for continuing to fall for the fact that Apple would stand by there customers with problems. Great that Apple Care is now being offered for extended mos. Looks like $10 a mos for coverage plus fees when you have a problem. At the 31 mos mark I'd be into it for $310 and then fees to replace and get the same model phone that is 2.5 years old. (that you shouldn't do updates on because you will have problems) Apple always makes out. (its a business but they should think of there customers). I know I am not alone in my opinion.
