iCloud syncing Mail data despite Mail turned off in iCloud

I have 2 MacBooks. One for private and for work.

I noticed getting rubbish in the Smart Mailbox section on my work MacBook. I could delete these folders and mailboxes, but they kept on coming back. It drove me insane.

A while ago I had Mail synchronizing in iCloud turned off, because there was a race condition when deleting a Smart Mailbox. I deleted one on my work MacBook. And before my private MacBook realized it had to delete something on its side, it decided that something was missing that it had so it wrote back the deleted mailbox to the sync data. This resulted in the deleted Smart Mailbox becoming visible again on the work MacBook. So I had iCould syncing for Mail switched off on my work MacBook.

This worked quite nicely, until recently.

Apparently - even if Mail syncing is turned off in iCloud, the private MacBook (that has Mail syncing ON in iCloud) still writes stuff to the iCloud that is being picked up by my Mail client on my work MacBook. ALTHOUGH MAIL SYNCING IS TURNED OFF.

I now turned of Mail Syncing on both machines and manually replaced all SyncedSmartMailboxes.plist with the correct one. Currently looking if this works.

I found copies in:

~/Library/Mail/V10/MailData

~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~mail/V4/MailData

~/Library/Mail/SmallCubed/MailTags (an extension to mail that I use)

~/Library/Mail/SmallCubed/SettingsSync (an extension to mail that I use)

I updated them all with xcode to only show the desired Mailboxes.

Currently looking if that fixed the issue.

Have you had similar issues? How did you fix this?

I'm afraid that when things work on my work MacBook, that I start having issues on my private MacBook, because the sync data now belongs to my work MacBook...
