"Looking for printer...." problem

If the printer is on a network (most are these days) assign it a static IP address. That way, it will always stay in the same location on your network so your Mac won't have to go looking for it.

Research the printer's documentation to determine how to assign it a static IP address. Then — depending on the printer — add it as an IP printer: Add a network printer by specifying its IP address - Apple Support

Not a general cure, but if you have an AirPrint model and there is a problem detecting the printer, it may be worth testing the following power-cycle procedure (do not forget the router):

Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the Mac, any iPhones and iPads, and all other computers/devices. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on the Mac. Power on any iPhones and iPads. Finally, power on all other computers/devices.

If additional information is needed, it would be important to know the exact printer make and model, how it is connected, and the Mac operating system version.

Troubleshooting "Looking for Printer...":

If you are trying to set this printer up for the first time, or have just installed an update, then visit to manufacturer's site of this printer, seeing if they have drivers for your macOS. If there are no drivers, then compatibility is just not an option, or the manufacturer has yet to provide the drivers.
