Your Mac has been Remotely Locked by Find My:

  1. Go Here:  If your Mac doesn't Start Up All the Way- Apple Support
  2. Scroll to: System lock PIN code
  3. As it Reads: "Your Mac asks for a PIN code when it has been remotely locked using Find My. Enter the four-digit or six-digit passcode to continue."

Who's Device?:

So, if this NOT your device, but someone else's? If so, that is why is is occurring, unless you locked it yourself, unknowingly.

Are you encountering a password field with the letters PIN in it on your usual login screen?

Have you ever used a CAC (Common Access Card) or Yubikey device on that Mac? If you don't know what those terms mean, then you probably have not, but someone else may have used one. Please write back for instructions.
