Known network is blocklisted

Someone I'm trying to assist with their Mac has trouble connecting to their new Wi-Fi modem at home.

I went through the logs, and there are several entries like this one:

I Googled 'Known network is blocklisted' and got no hits, so I hope someone here can shed some light on this.

Turned out to be a Wireguard issue. I'm not quite sure why, since Wireguard was set to 'on-demand', so it should not have affected Internet access on this Mac.

The Wireguard installation on the Mac had an old/obsolete endpoint configured. (Perhaps that IP is on some sort of blacklist nowadays?)

Anyway, after updating the Wireguard configuration the Mac now successfully connects to both the Internet and to the corporate network for which the Wireguard configuration is meant.

You may want to check what third party apps they have installed. Sounds like they may have some anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, or third party security software installed which may be modifying macOS behavior. Or maybe even VPN software running. Or maybe they have some sort of malware installed.

You can run (or have them run) EtreCheck in order to get a quick easy look at their system setup including the third party apps mentioned above which may be installed. Feel free to post the report here if you would like some assistance analyzing the report. Of course if they have malware, then they could use MalwareBytes to try to remove it (no need to keep it running or even installed after the scan). EtreCheck does not install anything other than a standard preference file to remember the answers to the initial setup questions....it can be run from the Downloads folder and deleted once it is no longer needed.

I'm quite familiar with blacklists, but I just never heard of the 'Known network is blocklisted' error.

All other devices on that particular network function properly, both Bill OS & Steve OS 😎

I haven't been on-site, but from what the enduser has shared with me it actually looks like the Mac connects to the Wi-fi, but doesn't get any internet access.
