the sidebar in apple mail won't expand, even when I hold the cursor on the divider and move it right

Wondering what you are seeing when you try ... eg: the cursor on the divider should be "changing" for you ...
Seems we need to carefully move the cursor on the dividing line until the cursor changes to a "small vertical bar with an arrow pointing out each side" (much like a small bold cross), Then, (with the cross cursor showing) carefully "press and drag" to expand or reduce the width of the sidebar. Once we catch the "knack" it is not difficult to do.
