Cannot delete files in "recents" folder on my Mac Pro

My Mac report a full disk, and I've been offloading files to iCloud. Every time I touch a file, it is recorded in the Recents folder. This creates a loop in which I tag files to offload to iCloud only to find them reappear in Recents. As a result, the Recents folder keeps my disk full. AND I have tried to delete (move to Trash) everything in Recents, but it all reappears. Any idea what's wrong and what to do?

The recents folder is a Virtual folder, created for your convenience in identifying recently-used items.

The recents folder itself takes up NO SPACE whatsoever. That is not where you should be looking for anything to remove.
