No ethernet connection on Apple TV

I have an Apple TV 4th generation and recently bought a 100mbps ethernet to connect from the router to the Apple TV and it never detects the ethernet cable. Completely switched off the wifi on the Apple TV, reset the Apple TV and the router and nothing works. I have an Asus Merlin router. What's the fix for this? It seems a ton of people have had this same issue, but nobody has a concrete answer.

Apple TV is supposed to auto-detect when anything is plugged into the ethernet port, and then disable Wi-Fi. If that doesn’t happen, then that auto-detect functionality may be broken. That may have a physical cause (dust in the port, or hardware defect), or a software cause (unlikely but possible, as in principle your tvOS software should be the same a everyone else’s). There are no software settings to tweak for this.

If you can’t see anything off about the ethernet port, then please contact the Apple Support staff for advise on a best course of action.
